Fired for initiating 15 administrative cases against miners who entered the protected area to extract gold | Despedidos por iniciar 15 procesos administrativos en contra de mineros que ingresaron al área protegida a explotar oro

Sernap dismissed two rangers from the Manuripi Reserve with 23 and 15 years of service after they initiated 15 cases against miners

The head of Natural Resource Protection at the Manuripi Amazon Wildlife Reserve (Pando), Luke López Beyuma, denounced that both he and park ranger Ignacio Huary Palomequi were removed from their positions between October and November of last year by the National Service of Protected Areas (Sernap), after he initiated 15 administrative cases against miners who entered the protected area to extract gold.

López sent Sumando Voces a memorandum of service appreciation and the resolution of a summary process that Sernap initiated against him and Huary to justify their dismissal.

Luke explained that miners previously extracted gold from the Madre de Dios River, along the edges of the reserve, but later began moving into its interior, where they are currently located. He stated that control has been lifted since park rangers lack even fuel for transportation.

“Since 2020, as there is not much gold left in the river, they are looking for ways to enter the protected area,” said López, who worked as a park ranger at the reserve from 2001 to 2020 and as head of natural resources from 2024 to 2024, totaling 23 years of service. Meanwhile, Huary had worked as a park ranger in the reserve for 15 years.

“The mining activity in the protected area has been one of the main reasons for our dismissal from the institution,” López stated at a press conference, holding the current director of the protected area, Denis Navarro, responsible.

He stated, “The dismissal was carried out without due process because they initiated a summary process against us within Sernap. We submitted all the supporting documents to refute the accusations, but Sernap, being in collusion with Mr. Denis Navarro, did not listen to us and disregarded all the evidence we presented in our defense,” he said.

In fact, he recounted that after the initiation of these processes, between January and February of last year, he encountered the miners again inside the protected area but could no longer take any action because they told him that they had settled the matter internally.

In addition to the 15 cases related to illegal mining, eight cases were initiated against Brazil nut harvesters for failing to meet extraction requirements.

In this context, López called for an investigation into these cases, as well as other complaints related to the occupation of public lands.

He stated that in the Manuripi Reserve, besides himself, there were seven other park rangers responsible for protection. However, the interim director of the reserve, Denis Navarro, is now also fulfilling López’s former duties.

Meanwhile, the director of Sernap, Johnson Jiménez, was dismissed from his position after allegations surfaced regarding the use of public assets for personal purposes.
