Presence of Armed People at Morales Supporters’ Blockade Aims to Cause Deaths, Denounces Deputy Minister Alcón

The presence of an armed person with a rifle at the Morales supporters’ blockade seeks to incite violence because they do not care if there are injuries or deaths, denounced Deputy Minister of Communication Gabriela Alcón, recalling statements made by former Minister of the Presidency Juan Ramón Quintana.

Videos circulating on social media show a person in the Bulo Bulo area carrying a rifle and pointing it towards a group of police officers who were trying to clear the sector for the passage of vehicles halted by the blockade.

According to reports, the man had his face covered but was carrying a rifle.

“This points to something that Evo Morales’ followers are seeking, as former Minister Juan Ramón Quintana said, this blockade is fueled by blood. We know that what they are looking for is precisely this chaos; they do not care if people are harmed, injured, or even killed,” stated Deputy Minister Gabriela Alcón.

Former Minister Juan Ramón Quintana, a controversial and influential figure in Evo Morales’ government, asserted amid the conflict involving Morales’ supporters that the protest on the roads is expanding and that “the ritual of the blockade is fueled by blood.

“Today the protest is expanding. The ritual of the blockades is a gradual ritual; it’s not overnight that we will have five blockade points. And how is the ritual of the blockade fueled? Unfortunately, it is fueled through blood,” stated Quintana.

Minister of Government Eduardo Del Castillo said the rifle was aimed at police officers, according to the videos that are being analyzed as part of the investigations to identify the perpetrators.

He questioned why a group of people was keeping vigil outside the UMOPAR (Mobile Unit for Rural Patrol) headquarters, noting that this coincided with the government’s recent destruction of 24 cocaine paste factories on Monday, another 27 factories on Sunday, as well as five clandestine airstrips. On Tuesday, two mega-laboratories in the Tropic of Cochabamba were also dismantled.

“It is no coincidence that today (Tuesday) the blockaders are keeping vigil outside UMOPAR. What are they defending? Drug traffickers? Pedophiles? We are going to investigate everything,” declared the official.

The police reported that, according to some audio recordings, the aim was to “take down” a police officer, which represents a reckless act when the sole objective was to clear the road for vehicle traffic.

Reports circulating on social media indicated that even journalists had to take cover on the ground due to gunfire at that point of the blockade.

The National Association of Journalists of Bolivia (ANPB) and the nine departmental journalists’ associations across the country condemned the escalation of violence against journalists by blockaders affiliated with a faction of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) and demanded that the government provide guarantees for the safety of journalists.

“We denounce that, according to reports from various media outlets, journalists who traveled to the Bulo Bulo area were forced to lie on the ground by allegedly armed blockaders in the Cochabamba tropics.”

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when journalists were covering the moment a police contingent attempted to forcibly remove one of the blockade points near Bulo Bulo. According to press reports, a group of armed blockaders, identified as followers of Evo Morales, threatened the journalists.
