“Masistas” threaten new blockades

  • Deputy Jerges Mercado stated that the “Evistas” need to be clear and acknowledge that their demands have nothing to do with social, economic, or political claims, but rather seek benefit and impunity for one person.

Former president Evo Morales’ failure to attend the hearings related to allegations against him for statutory rape and human trafficking, coupled with threats of unrest from his supporters if he is detained, led to criticism from Jerges Mercado, a “Arcista” faction deputy within the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). He questioned why adherence to the law should be conditioned solely to defend one individual.

Mercado expressed regret that the cocalero leader and his supporters seem to consider him above the law, noting that with Morales not appearing, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has a clear path to take the necessary legal actions, including issuing a warrant for his arrest.

Regarding threats from the “Evismo” faction to potentially launch nationwide roadblocks if legal proceedings against Morales progress, Mercado argued that these groups should be clear and acknowledge that their demands are not related to social, economic, or political grievances.

On the other hand, MAS leader Gerardo García warned that if an arrest warrant is indeed issued against former president Evo Morales, social organizations supporting him will mobilize across the country.

“If this government insists on issuing an arrest warrant for brother Evo Morales, I am certain that the people will immediately mobilize, especially if they try to imprison him,” he stated.

The former president was supposed to attend a hearing in Tarija to provide his testimony regarding a case of human trafficking and statutory rape. However, citing a “lack of guarantees,” he did not appear, and the Prosecutor’s Office announced that a warrant for his arrest would be issued. (EL DIARIO/Erbol)
