The National Press Association (ANP), representing print media, and the Association of Digital Media, which includes journalists working on digital platforms, demanded guarantees this Friday for the safety of journalistic work amidst the “evista” march approaching La Paz, in light of the attacks suffered by press workers.

A press release from the ANP notes that by Thursday night, a total of nine journalists had experienced violence and violations of press freedom. Former President Evo Morales (2006-2019), who is leading the march, avoided responding to the attacks and assaults committed by his supporters against journalists.

“Journalists subjected to whipping, a correspondent beaten, the detention of reporters, and the seizure of equipment are the main aspects of the violence carried out by militants of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) led by Morales, according to data and interviews conducted by the ANP’s Monitoring Unit,” the note states.

Meanwhile, the Association of Digital Media, through a statement, demanded that the Ministries of Government and Justice provide journalists with all constitutional guarantees to perform their work.

“Any attack on the lives of journalists is an attack on democracy,” the document states.
