The confrontation between the two factions of the MAS has entered its most critical and decisive phase: control of the streets through the use of violence. This was demonstrated on Tuesday in front of the Legislative Assembly, where followers of Luis Arce and supporters of the coca grower Morales clashed.
The “arcistas,” led by the Central Obrera Boliviana (COB), tried to take over the parliament to pressure opposition congressmen to approve the loans the government needs to mitigate the economic crisis. In addition to the approval of the loans, other crucial decisions are at stake, such as control of the MAS and the selection of the official candidate for the 2025 elections. Institutional and democratic channels have been exhausted and are stalled, both in the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and in the Constitutional Court.
Only the method that has traditionally resolved conflicts in Bolivia and that the MAS has consolidated as a mechanism of access and perpetuation in power remains. Recent clashes could become a constant in the coming months.

La confrontación entre las dos facciones del MAS ha entrado en su fase más crítica y decisiva: el control de las calles mediante el uso de la violencia. Esto quedó demostrado este martes frente a la Asamblea Legislativa, donde los seguidores de Luis Arce y los simpatizantes del cocalero Morales se enfrentaron a golpes.
Los “arcistas”, liderados por la Central Obrera Boliviana (COB), intentaron tomar el parlamento para presionar a los congresistas del bando opositor a aprobar los créditos que el gobierno requiere para mitigar la crisis económica. Además de la aprobación de los préstamos, están en juego otras decisiones cruciales, como el control del MAS y la selección del candidato oficialista para las elecciones de 2025. Las vías institucionales y democráticas se han agotado y están estancadas, tanto en el Tribunal Supremo Electoral como en el Tribunal Constitucional.
Solo queda el método que tradicionalmente ha resuelto los conflictos en Bolivia y que el MAS ha consolidado como un mecanismo de acceso y perpetuación en el poder. Los enfrentamientos recientes podrían convertirse en una constante en los próximos meses.
