Conade calls for a march on Monday to protest census data and the economic crisis

The population census results delivered by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) were not well received by departmental and municipal authorities, as they do not match the projections previously issued by that agency.

La Paz – In response to the economic crisis facing the country and in protest of the 2024 census results, the National Committee for the Defense of Democracy (Conade) has called for a national march this Monday at various times.

The National Committee for the Defense of Democracy calls on citizens to mobilize through protest marches nationwide, in all departments, this Monday, September 2, 2024, at different times. Several organizations have made similar calls,” states the announcement.

The population census results delivered by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) were not well received by departmental or municipal authorities, as they do not align with the projections previously issued by that agency.

This march joins one called by the Pro Santa Cruz Committee and the Interinstitutional Committee for this Monday, starting at 10:00 AM, with participation from various sectors, institutions, social organizations, and civil society.

Meanwhile, the mayor of La Paz, Iván Arias, has called for a “Assembly of the Paceñidad” on Tuesday, where they will evaluate the population growth data and expect the INE director to provide more information.

In El Alto, a similar assembly is scheduled for mid-week to analyze the figures. Both municipalities have decided to form a technical team to review the national survey results.

Other Demands

Conade is demanding a structural solution from the government to address the economic crisis, the shortage of dollars, and the irregular fuel supply, which they believe demonstrates the failure of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) economic model.

In this context, they rejected possible restrictions announced by President Luis Arce for the potential control or mandatory exchange of foreign currency, which would only harm the population.

Given the rising prices of basic food items, they believe the government should seek solutions and partnerships with the private sector to ensure food security.

“Prices of basic food items are rising daily. All inflationary processes ultimately reduce household incomes, creating a perverse policy of punishing the population. Therefore, the government and the private sector must implement real policies to achieve food security,” states another part of the note.
