They expressed their repudiation with protests for the death of a jaguar in the hands of officials of the Chinese company Sinohydro and questioned the silent release of a Chinese citizen for a previous case.

“What’s happening in Santa Cruz shows that these crimes continue and necessary actions are not being taken; there is impunity,” said Daniela Justiniano of the environmental organization Alas Chiquitanas. She recalled that one of the individuals involved in jaguar trafficking was quietly released some time ago.

She added that recent photos show two Chinese nationals, employees of Sinohydro, skinning and dismembering another jaguar, a species considered threatened and vulnerable according to Bolivia’s Red Book of Vertebrate Wildlife.

On social media, Alas Chiquitanas reported that on May 5th, a jaguar was run over and dismembered by Sinohydro workers.

“We are outraged to learn that the parts were found in the possession of a Pakistani citizen and two Bolivians, but the most infuriating part is that the Forestry Police (Pofoma) did not arrest those involved. This is a case of biocide and also wildlife trafficking,” they posted.

Activists protested, demanding a thorough investigation by the Cochabamba Prosecutor’s Office and the maximum penalty of ten years’ imprisonment for the crimes of biocide and wildlife trafficking.

Daniela Justiniano criticized Pofoma and the Cochabamba Governor’s Office for failing to fulfill their duties and enforce the law, “which clearly states that if these situations and evidence are found within a company’s camp, they must comply with the provisions outlined in their environmental impact studies,” she said.

The protests were supported by the Justice for the Amazon collective from Cochabamba and the Civil Legal Environmental Justice Association, which filed the complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the complaints, the three individuals involved are Sinohydro workers constructing the Cochabamba-Santa Cruz double highway. “There’s no update yet, but we are collecting signatures for the lawsuit,” said Rodrigo Herrera of the Civil Legal Environmental Justice Association.

Traces of the Crime

The dismemberment of the jaguar left evidence, including a series of photographs showing the moments when different parts of the animal were being removed. This jaguar is considered part of a vulnerable species according to Bolivia’s Red Book of Vertebrate Wildlife.

POFOMA REPORT

It clearly states that Sinohydro staff voluntarily handed over the jaguar parts to specialized environmental crime police. However, Herrera noted that the prosecutor’s documents did not mention the jaguar was found on Sinohydro’s premises.
