The Bolivian Justice Department has extended the preventive detention of former interim president Jeanine Áñez for the ninth time. This is in relation to the case known as ‘coup d’état I’ in which she is accused of terrorism and complicity in the political and social crisis of 2019 in Bolivia.

Áñez expressed her frustration on social media, stating that she is being accused of a crime that never existed. She also claimed that the real terrorists are free and in total impunity, pointing fingers at former president Evo Morales and former vice president Álvaro García.

The former president has been in preventive imprisonment in a La Paz prison since March 2021 for the ‘coup d’état I’ case. She was arrested on charges of terrorism, sedition, and conspiracy due to the 2019 crisis. The case also involves other individuals, including the governor of the eastern region of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, who has been accused as the author along with others.

The ruling party believes that there was a ‘coup d’état’ against Morales in 2019, while the opposition argues that the protests leading to his resignation were a result of fraud in his favor during the annulled elections of that year.

In addition to the ‘coup d’état I’ case, there is another case called ‘coup d’état II’ in which Áñez was sentenced to 10 years for illegally placing herself in the line of succession in 2019. She also faces at least another seven cases opened in the ordinary justice system.

The former interim president maintains that in 2019, there was electoral fraud in favor of Morales, which led to his resignation and a subsequent “vacuum of power” and “violence.” She also claims to have assumed and pacified the situation, and that the real perpetrators of violence are the ones who are free and in total impunity.

The political and social crisis of 2019 in Bolivia has led to a series of legal battles and accusations against various individuals, including Áñez and other government officials. The situation remains complex and continues to unfold in the Bolivian justice system.
