In crisis, the alledged economic armor

CEPB logoThe economy of the country suffered in 2016 and marked for the second consecutive year figures that reveal a stagnation leaving behind the discourse of the armored economy and the bonaza decade.

Although there was a growth of 4.7% in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), one of the largest in the region, the percentage was lower than projected for this year (5%) and, at the same time, the country scored the largest trade deficit in the last 11 years. This context did not allow the payment of the double bonus as it has been doing in the last three years, ANF said in a report Wednesday.

Despite the reduction in revenues, the Government has projected a GDP growth of 4.3% for 2017, the lowest in the administration of President Evo Morales, but one of the highest in the continent due to the strong investment injection through debt.

But that level of growth lower than expected ended up burying the double Christmas bonus that for three years was paid as a reward for a good economic performance greater than 4.5%. Although it was a resisted and questioned measure by business sectors, the second bonus amounted to an increase in the income of thousands of employees, a benefit that has now been lost.

The Confederation of Private Entrepreneurs of Bolivia (CEPB) assured that in three years of payment of this benefit more than 1 billion dollars was spent, which could well have been destined to the investment in new technologies and the generation of jobs.
