Tarija boutique winery preserves the spirit of wine
INITIATIVE since 2003, Magnus winery produces wines from limited edition which has won international competitions. It is also part of La Ruta del Vino [the wine route].
Guarded by the archangels of the colonial paintings of its walls and surrounded by vineyards that are stained with the nuances of the sunsets in the tarijan Valley, is the only Winery boutique in the southern capital, Magnus.
Wine production and variety of wines have become the best showcase of Tarija. This well earned reputation joined in 2006, by the output to the market of the Magnus wines, with a cabernet sauvignon of 2003 harvest.
A boutique winery produced in low volumes, a wine that has gained popularity; Additionally it is catalogued by the experience that has in cordial dealings, almost familiar, which receives visitors who want to discover the world of viticulture.
The spouses Ernesto Magnus and Liz Arancibia were responsible for boosting production in a venture with a great tradition, who was born nearly a century ago on the initiative of their families.
“Our premise was, is and always will be producing a good wine. Complex and pleasing, aggressive, but at the same time gentle to the palate; “was not in plans to make a boutique winery: simply believe in creating the wine cellar and the wine that we dream”, says Liz Arancibia.
Currently, Magnus produces four varieties of wine: cabernet sauvignon, cabernet syrah, cabernet merlot and rosé. The winery produces less than 4,500 bottles of each varietal, which implies the maximum care should be taken in the contents of each package.
One of the peculiarities is that each bottle is numbered, so that who acquires it knows the place occupied in this exclusive universe of less than 4,500 varietal.
His production, in the four above-mentioned varieties, has earned Magnus to receive gold and silver medals in international competitions like the Vinalies, in France, and also Vinandino and La Mujer Elige [The Woman Chooses], both in Argentina.
The winery opened to visits two years ago to show its family way of making wine; whoever wants to know the vineyard can packed, label and carry their own bottle of varietal wine home.

Family, a registered trademark
“It all started with the excuse of a family party,” recalls Liz Arancibia, when in 2000 they decided to make wine grape treading and following the traditions of the vintages of yore. It was a success that would encourage them to venture into more and undertake the rescue of a family tradition.
In 1928, Carlos Magnus Hornschuh alongside his family reached one of their desires: build the first Winery in which produced wines that took his surname as a trade mark. It was built at the foot of the Church of San Juan, where the Spaniards founded the Villa de San Bernardo de la Frontera, best known today as Tarija.
“In another province, in the Valley of Concepcion, in a house built in 1814 by the general José María Avilés, hero of the independence war of the Alto [high] Peru – today recognized as historical-, Zambrana family made handcrafted wine and Singani Santa Rosa”, evokes Liz Arancibia to speak of her ancestors.
The current Winery, located in the area of Torrecillas, ten minutes from the Center of Tarija, was built by this marriage with their own hands.
“Since 2007 I am working as if we were among friends. From that we are in the winery more wines have been bottled and the nicest thing is when people come to visit us,”says Jair Altamirano, the cellar worker.
The details, something invaluable
Two years ago the Magnus Winery were encouraged to be part of La Ruta del Vino [the wine route], a route that offers the Gaviota Travel Tourism Agency.
“It is part of a project called ‘Lovers of wine’, consisting of our agency and the Los Parrales Hotel. Magnus is included because is the only boutique Winery of Tarija”, says the commercial Manager of Gaviota Travel, Rafael Jijena.
To receive visitors, Luz Arancibia shows not only the winery, but it teaches something of the ancient culture of wine.
Learn to taste young wine, another of a year, and then one that it has three years of aging, as well as observe the glycerin or admire its color, it is possible, while runs the winery, thanks to the knowledge and friendliness of the hosts.
One of the highlights is to taste the wines with a range of cheeses and pates created by Ernesto Magnus, including foie gras of goose; then come the sweets prepared by Liz Arancibia: the kinoto is definitely contest.
Answers to questions about wine, its production and viticulture are received with the captivated senses – in particular, taste and sight -.
To see the vineyards that left behind makes you want to return. Today we know how each of the vines was watered by the children of this marriage of entrepreneurs and it is possible to conclude that the flavor of each harvest is sheltered in bottles guarded by archangels.
