TIPNIS group to face trouble in Yucumo

This cartoon is from El Diario, Sep 11, 2011. It shows how the TIPNIS protest walking group continues its march towards La Paz. As they reach Yucumo, a group of sympathizers from current government, like coca growers and settlers have dug ditches and are blockading the road, hoping to stop the TIPNIS group.

The Permanent Human Rights Assembly President, Yolanda Herrera believes sadly that there is imminent risk that a confrontation could take place between those two groups.

One of the Guarani leaders accompanying the protest, Celso Padilla told the press the TIPNIS group will defend themselves if they are provoked or offended by the campesinos (settlers).

An Aymara, Rafael Quispe told the press that they want the Human Rights and the United Nations to be present in Yucumo, when the TIPNIS group arrives; he said “We are not mice to fall in the trap that they want us to fall in Yucumo, because of that we want that the overseers be our warrantors.”

The leader of the blockading group, Rene Huasco told ERBOL radio that a new meeting should take place between the government and the ethnic group should solve the conflict through dialogue.

If Huasco said that, then why blockade? Just that remark makes you wonder if those settlers are really unbiased or just an instrument of current government.
