Images Reveal the Tilcayo Cat Playing with a Baby Spectacled Bear at a Yungas Wildlife Refuge
A newly identified species, believed to be the first scientific description of a wild cat in more than a century, is currently living in Bolivia

Following the recent announcement of a newly identified feline species living in Bolivia, the wildlife refuge and sanctuary Senda Verde shared footage showing the small Tilcayo Cat inside its refuge in the Yungas several years ago.
According to the description accompanying the video, the footage was recorded in 2021, when the refuge staff still did not know that the animal belonged to a previously unknown species of wild feline. [to watch video, click here]
“In 2021, our volunteer Noelia captured this moment between Tigrino and Thaki, a baby spectacled bear that had just arrived. At the time, we did not know that Tigrino belonged to a species not yet recognized by science. To us, he was already part of Senda Verde,” the refuge explained.
The footage shows the small animal running among bushes and vegetation while trying to play with a baby spectacled bear standing on the other side of a fence.
Another video shows the feline, as it was named, resting on the high branches of a tree within Senda Verde, the habitat where it currently remains under protection.
About Tigrino
His story became part of a scientific investigation after he came into the care of specialists. He had been handed over by a family from the Yungas region of La Paz, who had attempted to raise him as a pet. Local residents believed he was a domestic animal.
The species is a feline smaller than a domestic cat, distinguished by its slender body and large spots. It is believed to represent the first scientific description of a new wild cat species in more than a century.
Its scientific name is Leopardus tilcayo, though it is commonly known as the “Tilcayo Cat,” a name that honors the ancestral knowledge of local communities in the Yungas.
The species currently lives at Senda Verde, where research confirmed that Leopardus tilcayo is a species never before described by science, according to biologist Paola Nogales, who participated in the study. The scientist emphasized that “it is a unique cat.”

Tras conocerse sobre la existencia de una nueva especie felina que se encuentra habitando en territorio boliviano; el refugio y santuario de vida silvestre ‘Senda Verde’, compartió imágenes del pequeño Gato Tilcayo hace algunos años dentro del refugio en los Yungas.
De acuerdo a la descripción, el video fue captado en 2021 cuando los encargados del refugio aún no tenían conocimiento de que se trataba una especie no conocida de felino silvestre. [para ver el video, haga click aquí]
“En 2021, nuestra voluntaria Noelia grabó este momento entre Tigrino y Thaki, un jucumari bebé recién llegado. Aún no sabíamos que Tigrino pertenecía a una especie no reconocida por la ciencia. Para nosotros, ya era parte de Senda Verde”, dicen.
En las imágenes se ve al pequeño animalito correr entre los arbustos y la vegetación del lugar mientras intenta jugar con una cría de oso jucumari que está del otro lado de la cerca.
Asimismo, en otro video se observa al felino, como fue nombrado, reposando en las altas ramas de un árbol dentro de Senda Verde, el habitad donde actualmente se encuentra refugiado.
Sobre Tigrino
Su historia marca el proceso de la investigación luego de que llegara a las manos de los especialistas tras ser entregado por una familia de los Yungas, en La Paz, que intentó criarlo como una mascota. Los comunarios de la región creyeron que era así.
Se trata de una especie de felino que es más pequeño que un gato domesticado y se distingue por su esbelta figura y sus grandes motas y que, supone es la primera descripción científica de una nueva especie de gato salvaje en más de un siglo.
Su nombre científico es Leopardus Tilcayo, pero se lo conoce como “Gato Tilcayo”, que honra el saber ancestral de las comunidades locales de los Yungas.
Esta nueva especie vive actualmente en Senda Verde, donde un estudio confirmó que el Leopardus Tilcayo es una especie nunca antes descrita por la ciencia, indicó la bióloga Paola Nogales, quien fue parte de la investigación. La científica destacó que “es un gato único”.
