Sorghum Is the Main Crop of the Winter Season | Sorgo es el principal cultivo de la campaña de invierno

By Patricia Canido, El Mundo:

The general manager of the Association of Oilseed and Wheat Producers (Anapo), Jaime Hernández, reported that sorghum has consolidated itself as the main product of the winter agricultural season in Santa Cruz, with a preliminary projection of more than 500,000 hectares planted.

Initial data show sustained growth in the area planted with sorghum in the eastern zone of the department of Santa Cruz, where sunflower, corn, wheat, and chia are also cultivated.

“The crop being planted the most is sorghum, with more than 500,000 hectares, but we still have to wait until planting is completed to have more precise data,” Hernández told Canal Rural of Unitel.

The executive indicated that the increase in the area planted with sorghum is mainly due to crop rotation practices and sustainable soil management implemented by agricultural producers.

“Sorghum is a crop that increases its planted area year after year because of the rotation practices and sustainable management producers carry out to improve their soils,” he explained.

Hernández also highlighted the strategic importance of this grain for different productive chains in the country, especially for the poultry, pork, dairy, and livestock sectors, due to its use in animal feed.

In contrast, Anapo warned of a significant reduction in the area allocated to wheat cultivation during this winter season. According to preliminary estimates, planting would not exceed 50,000 hectares.

“Wheat cultivation will be one of the crops seeing a reduction in planted area. We assume it will not surpass 50,000 hectares, which already represents a significant decrease,” he stated. (La Razón)
