Every May 26, Bolivian heroes are remembered: the Colorados Battalion and their bravery in the Battle of Alto de la Alianza

The Battle of Alto de la Alianza

The Battle of Alto de la Alianza was one of the most important events of the War of the Pacific. This confrontation took place on May 26, 1880, on the Intiorko plateau near Tacna, Peru. In this battle, the armies of Bolivia and Peru fought together against Chilean forces. It is remembered for the courage and sacrifice of the Bolivian soldiers, especially the Colorados Battalion of Bolivia, considered one of the country’s most important military units.

Every May 26, the Day of the Colorados of Bolivia is commemorated in honor of those who fought defending the homeland during the war.

Background of the War of the Pacific

The War of the Pacific began in 1879 due to territorial and economic disputes between Bolivia and Chile. The conflict was related to control over mineral-rich territories located in the Atacama Desert, which belonged to Bolivia. Peru participated as Bolivia’s ally thanks to the Treaty of Defensive Alliance signed in 1873.

One of the first important events was the Battle of Calama, fought on March 23, 1879, where Eduardo Abaroa led the Bolivian resistance against the Chilean invasion. As the conflict advanced, Bolivia faced a severe political and military crisis. President Hilarión Daza was overthrown at the end of 1879, and General Narciso Campero assumed command of both the country and the Bolivian army.

Preparations for the Battle

In April 1880, General Campero headed toward Tacna with new Bolivian troops to reinforce the allied army. There he organized the defense together with the Peruvian forces led by Rear Admiral Lizardo Montero. The allied troops established positions on the Alto de la Alianza plateau, a desert region characterized by strong winds and difficult weather conditions.

Despite facing an enemy with a larger number of soldiers and better military equipment, the Bolivian and Peruvian forces prepared a defensive line to stop the Chilean advance.

The Course of the Battle

The battle began on the morning of May 26 with an intense Chilean attack. For several hours, Bolivian and Peruvian troops resisted the enemy advance in a fierce combat. One of the most remembered moments occurred when the Colorados Battalion of Bolivia entered the battlefield, commanded by Colonel Ildefonso Murguía Anze. According to Bolivian military tradition, the soldiers advanced shouting: “Hold on, rotos, here come the Colorados of Bolivia.”

Armed with Remington rifles and wearing their traditional red jackets, the Colorados carried out a heroic action. However, physical exhaustion and Chilean military superiority weakened the allied forces. After several hours, the Bolivian and Peruvian army was defeated.

Bolivian Heroes

Among the most remembered figures is Colonel Ildefonso Murguía Anze, a symbol of national heroism. Also notable is Juancito Pinto, a young drummer boy who accompanied Bolivian troops during the war. His role was not to fight directly, but to transmit orders with his drum and support communication on the battlefield.

On January 17, 1876, Colonel Ildefonso Murguía Anze was appointed commander of the 1st Line Battalion (Colorados). • GDP

Consequences of the Battle

The defeat at Alto de la Alianza had serious consequences for Bolivia and Peru. After this battle, Bolivia practically ceased direct participation in military operations. Peru continued fighting until 1883, while Bolivia faced political and economic problems that made sustaining its military effort difficult.

Finally, in 1904, Bolivia and Chile signed the Treaty of Peace and Friendship, through which Bolivia officially lost its sovereign access to the Pacific Ocean.

Historical Importance

The Battle of Alto de la Alianza is remembered as a significant example of Bolivian heroism during the War of the Pacific. Its legacy remains alive in national memory as a symbol of unity, patriotism, and love for Bolivia.
