The Chamber of Senators approved Tuesday night the bills to repeal the Financial Transactions Tax (ITF) and to restore 100% of the VAT tax credit on fuel purchases.

Both bills were forwarded to the Government for their enactment and implementation by President Rodrigo Paz.

“This means that when we made deposits or withdrawals in dollars from any bank in the financial system, we were paying a confiscatory tax (…) now it has been repealed,” said Senator Abdón Porcel regarding the elimination of the ITF, according to the Unitel network.

The ITF was approved in 2006 and was intended to be temporary, but it has remained in force on banking transactions. This tax applies to operations carried out in foreign currency at a rate of 0.30 per thousand.

Meanwhile, in 2023 it was established that only 70% of the value of invoices for gasoline and diesel purchases could be counted as VAT tax credit. This measure aimed to limit the impact of the state subsidy.

Once the subsidy is lifted and fuel prices are raised to international levels, the Paz government committed to restoring 100% of the tax credit for fuel purchases.
