Personnel of the Bolivian Navy succeeded in destroying four clandestine mining camps that were operating without environmental authorization inside the Madidi National Park and Integrated Natural Management Area (La Paz).

According to a report from the Ministry of Defense, in a strategic operation to protect the environment and national sovereignty, “naval forces achieved the destruction of four clandestine mining camps that were operating without environmental authorization, causing severe damage to the ecosystem of one of the most important biodiversity reserves in the country.”

The intervention followed intelligence work and preventive patrols in the river basins that cross the park. Upon arriving at the identified sites, the operational units confirmed the presence of precarious settlements equipped for the illicit extraction of minerals.

According to authorities, during the operation the total burning and destruction of four camps was carried out, along with the seizure of tools used to remove sediments and the eviction of people linked to these activities, who were operating outside the Mining and Metallurgy Law.

“Illegal mining in Madidi not only erodes riverbanks, but also introduces contaminating agents such as mercury, putting at risk the health of indigenous communities and local wildlife,” the press release states.

Through the statement, the Bolivian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to maintain permanent surveillance on Amazonian rivers to halt the advance of unregulated extractive activities that threaten “Mother Earth.”
