With Rodrigo Paz’s inauguration as President of Bolivia, scheduled for this Saturday, María Elena Urquidi will become the new First Lady of the Nation — a symbolic and institutional figure returning to the public stage after two decades.

For the past 20 years, Bolivia has had no First Lady. During the long rule of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS), former president Evo Morales was unmarried, while his successor Luis Arce chose to keep his wife Lourdes Durán outside the protocol sphere and without official duties.

The return of this institutional role marks a shift in the State’s dynamic and reflects the new government’s intent to revalue the family’s role and civic participation in social, educational, and cooperation initiatives traditionally promoted by the Office of the First Lady.

Urquidi will accompany President Paz at the official inauguration events in the Plurinational Legislative Assembly starting at 10 a.m. Later, she is expected to promote programs supporting children, women, and public health — reviving the spirit of service that characterized Bolivia’s First Ladies before 2006.

With her inclusion in the institutional sphere, Bolivia restores a representative figure of state protocol — absent for two decades — and opens a new stage in which the First Lady could play an active role in promoting the country’s social and cultural values.
