The increase in the prices of ingredients used to make bread and pastries for the All Saints’ Day celebration is worrying vendors and families alike. On Antonio Gallardo Street, sellers report higher costs for a quintal of flour and for yeast.

“Yeast is more expensive — it used to cost 12 bolivianos, and now we sell it for 20. Flour is 320 bolivianos per quintal,” said one vendor.

The situation is also complicated by the rising prices of sugar and shortening. A quintal of sugar now costs 265 bolivianos, and a sachet of shortening is 15, according to the sellers.

A similar situation is being reported in the city of Cochabamba, where sugar prices have also gone up. A quintal of sugar there costs between 260 and 270 bolivianos.

Sugar prices have been going up since June, and this is the time of year when we stock up the most,” explained one vendor.

Due to the increase in ingredient costs, sellers say that sales have declined and hope that prices will soon stabilize.

The celebration, held in Bolivia on November 1 and 2, begins days earlier with the preparation of bread and special orders, but the high cost of ingredients is affecting planning.
