The prices of basic food basket products have once again skyrocketed in recent days, with increases of up to 300% in some markets and supermarkets, mainly in the cities of the central axis.

This disproportionate rise severely affects the purchasing power of Bolivian families and puts their basic right to adequate nutrition at risk.

According to recent citizen reports received by El Diario, essential products such as beef, ground meat, whole chicken, vegetables, fruits, and lemons have shown increases exceeding 50% over the past year; in some specific cases, prices have nearly tripled.

For example, a kilo of beef in Santa Cruz de la Sierra costs Bs 95, and an avocado sells for Bs 34.

In La Paz, chicken meat rose to Bs 25 per kilo; 25 small lemons sell for Bs 28, and small papayas now cost Bs 18 in city markets.

This marked inflation directly affects families’ ability to meet basic needs and is generating growing social concern.

When asked about the reasons behind these increases, vendors indicate that the shortage of diesel fuel is the main factor.

In this regard, in recent days no authority legally responsible for addressing the issue, such as the Vice Ministry of Consumer Defense, has made any statement.
