Digni-fools and sheep in runoffs

In all democracies, or at least where elections are held and people go to vote, there’s always an “electArate.” It’s a subjective term: it refers to that portion of the electorate that supposedly votes “wrong.” In other words, each person might consider as the “electArate” those who voted for the candidate they themselves didn’t support. Now, in countries that have presidential runoffs, the composition of that electArate becomes more visible and can largely be divided into two groups: the “digni-fools” and the sheep.

The first group is generally informed and has a certain level of formal education; they’re professionals, independent workers, or mid-to-high level public servants, or they may be entrepreneurs — from small to large scale. They might even be political or opinion leaders. Other social segments aren’t excluded, of course. These people probably know what’s best for their country because they’ve read or listened to the platforms of the two runoff candidates; they know them better because the campaigns have continued, and there may have been more debates or interviews revealing their strengths and weaknesses. Those who, knowing there’s a clearly more capable candidate for the presidency — the one who would benefit the country — but still vote for the other, are digni-fools. Why? Because such people lack the nobility to acknowledge that there was and is a candidate more capable than themselves or than the one they supported in the first round. Therefore, they act out of a kind of dignity disguised as poor, childish excuses such as: “we must respect the results of the first round,” “the majority already chose in the first round,” or “we should support the first-round winner to start solving problems right away.” They not only delegitimize the runoff, which is entirely constitutional, but also make others believe that by moving forward immediately there are greater chances to fix the country’s bankruptcy. It’s not about moving forward — it’s about moving forward correctly — because Bolivia cannot afford to keep committing the same “horrors,” as there’s nothing left to pay for those mistakes except with a loss of governability that could lead the country over the cliff and possibly into a coup, a dictatorship, or the “Venezuelanization” of Bolivia. Furthermore, new elections would no longer be tolerated. All of that — for their “dignity”? Another possibility, not necessarily exclusive, is that they know they’ll get benefits (e.g., favors, jobs), receive protection (e.g., having legal cases dropped or not even started despite clear evidence), or believe they could be appointed to a ministry or vice ministry, a high-ranking public office, or gain political support — and/or they expect their productive, service, or media companies to get government contracts. Others prefer not to speak up but are just as petty as the first ones. For such people, Bolivia is not the priority; they are not patriots; they are subliminal traitors to Bolivia. If not for Bolivia, at least they should do it for their children and grandchildren.

Now, the sheep — also known as lambs — are docile and gregarious animals that form flocks, follow a leader, and flee at any sign of danger or threat. But the sheep that humanity breeds today are a different phenomenon, a clear sign of the downfall toward which Homo sapiens is evolving. There have always been sheep — in the most primitive tribes, in the greatest religions, and in the most powerful empires. There are lazy, opportunistic sheep that only want plenty of grass regardless of the consequences. There are sheep who have only ever seen and listened to one leader, know nothing else, and therefore believe he’s a god. There are harmless sheep who vote hoping to get something in return (like the legalization of smuggled cars). Sheep who blindly follow blockades and demonstrations without even knowing what cause they’re supporting. Or sheep who, indignant, bleat endlessly, “justice for all.” There are modern sheep, but just as foolish — those who feed on social media without verifying sources and believe everything, or almost everything, because they don’t know how to discern, and they listen to whoever shouts the loudest or pretends to be brave and bold.

These sheep are herded into the political pen by a few loud, self-serving sheepdogs. These dogs believe that the louder they bark — especially with insults — the stronger and more honest they appear as leaders. Some of these sheepdogs live in the country, others in little republics, or abroad, manipulating their local peers like glove or string puppets. Sheepdogs who don’t care about keeping their flock in order but rather about herding the masses through fear, insults, and lies. Sheep who choke while blaming imperialism, the right wing, those who work hard and have more resources — because they themselves are inept, lazy, corrupt, and responsible for the left’s failures.

The digni-fools understand the situation; some of the sheep do, others perhaps not. What we cannot allow is to repeat the same mistakes — we cannot extend the moral and economic bankruptcy for another five years. If we do, what remains of democracy and freedom will be exhausted.
