The legendary Willys roam the streets of Santa Cruz

The club that unites them in Santa Cruz celebrated its 22nd anniversary, and the legendary jeeps were declared a Departmental Historical Heritage

Twenty-two years after its creation, the Willys Club of Santa Cruz has solid reasons to celebrate with its members. Since October 3, 2003, it has become a consolidated institution, and a new departmental law has just recognized the legendary jeeps — for their protection and preservation — as part of the region’s Historical Heritage. These daring and passionate “Willys enthusiasts” have traveled across the department in annual caravans covering more than 15,000 kilometers, even reaching beyond its borders to the departments of Beni, Chuquisaca, and Cochabamba.

The Willys, manufactured in the U.S. more than eight decades ago for use during World War II, became the first 4×4 vehicles to arrive in Santa Cruz in the early 1950s. They crossed, without difficulty, the sandy and muddy roads of the old bell-tower town, where — aside from private use — they were also employed as public-service “taxis.”

Thanks to their remarkable performance, the Willys were regarded as an icon of the era of Santa Cruz’s economic takeoff. Restored or refurbished to impeccable condition, these small jeeps are admired in exhibitions, parades, or simply when seen driving through the streets and avenues of the Santa Cruz capital and its surroundings.
