What should Bolivia learn from Milei’s defeat? | ¿Qué debe aprender Bolivia de la derrota de Milei?

“These are clear lessons that Bolivia must consider: agreements in the legislature, stabilization policies, and later, growth policies that ensure continuity of economic progress,” said Ríos.

Santa Cruz.– The recent defeat of Argentine president Javier Milei at the polls not only impacts Argentina’s politics and economy, but also offers important lessons for Bolivia, warned financial economist Mauricio Ríos in an interview on La Hora Pico on eju.tv, hosted by Belén Mendivil, Jorge Robles, and Ernesto Justiniano.

Ríos explained that the main mistake of Milei and his party, La Libertad Avanza, was improvisation in the selection of candidates, as well as in economic policy. “The period of economic stabilization has already passed, and now the focus must be on growth policies, which require structural reforms that can only be approved by law in the legislature,” he noted.

According to the economist, without majorities or solid agreements in Congress, the reforms needed for sustained growth cannot be implemented. In that sense, he said that voters punished Milei for breaking promises, such as including former Kirchnerists on his lists and the alleged involvement of relatives in corruption cases, sending a clear message about the need for changes in political strategy.

Ríos warned that these challenges are also reflected in Bolivia: “The analogy with Argentina shows us that improvisation in forming lists and political teams makes it difficult to implement structural reforms. In Bolivia, the challenge must be taken seriously, by building solid, prepared teams to face the ongoing economic crisis.”

He then added: “How can the Argentine analogy be applied in Bolivia? Precisely through the improvisation we’ve seen not only in the PDC with the formation of its lists, but also in the lists of Alianza Libre of Tuto Quiroga, and even those of Unidad Alianza of Samuel Donia Medina. All three fronts have turned their lists into a carnival.”

The economist stressed that although Milei’s stabilization policies had been successful, the country must now focus on long-term reforms and sustainable economic growth, reminding that the future depends on responsible political decisions and the formation of competent teams at all levels of government.

In this context, Ríos warned that the lack of majorities and the improvisation in forming candidate lists hinder the implementation of structural reforms and sustained growth. “These are clear lessons that Bolivia must consider: agreements in the legislature, stabilization policies, and later, growth policies that ensure continuity of economic progress,” he affirmed.
