The financial analyst accused the vice-presidential candidate of spreading lies about him.

Financial analyst Jaime Dunn criticized vice-presidential candidate Edman Lara, accusing him of spreading lies and inaccuracies about him.

“What caught my attention was Lara speaking against me, lies against me, saying things with much inaccuracy (…) It’s clear to me that Lara has become a traditional politician, a pity,” Dunn said in a video posted on his social media.

The economist also denied working at the Central Bank, as Lara allegedly claimed. “Captain Lara says I’m an employee of the Central Bank, imagine, what a big lie,” he stated.

Nevertheless, Dunn insisted he remains open to dialogue. “Our doors are always open to people, and I don’t respond to that kind of criticism,” he added.

After online threats, analysts see former captain Edman Lara as a danger to democracy

Former Bolivian police captain and vice-presidential candidate for the Christian Democratic Party (PDC), Edman Lara, is once again at the center of controversy after posting a video on social media in which he threatened those who might try to harm him. His statements sparked strong reactions, leading analysts to describe him as a danger to democracy.

Although the context of the video is unclear, Lara’s remarks add to a series of controversial episodes, including calling an elderly journalist “old man,” labeling a presidential candidate a “faggot,” threatening presidential hopeful Rodrigo Paz, and lashing out at the media in a defensive tone.

“To those who want to harm me, it’s going to cost you. I am a police officer trained for four years at the academy, well-trained, strong-willed, strong-minded, with courage and balls, and I know how to defend myself. I’ve also been trained, and to those who want to hurt me, think twice, because if you fail in your attempt I will not forgive you. If you’re going to do something to me, think carefully, plan well, because you’re giving me opportunities to come back and I will come looking for you. I will teach you to respect (…). So to everyone who wants to harm me, think carefully, because if you make a mistake, I will not forgive you. That’s how clear it is,” Lara warned.

Lawyer and former military officer Omar Durán told Erbol that Lara’s warning “shows he is a danger to democracy, because at any moment he could become unstable, even attack his own president, Rodrigo Paz.” He added that fortunately, citizens can correct the support they gave in the first round of elections on August 17, since the popularity of the Paz-Lara ticket has substantially dropped.

Durán compared Lara’s profile to past authoritarian leaders such as dictators Benito Mussolini in Italy and Pol Pot in Cambodia. He also noted that other politicians like Hugo Chávez rose with populist speeches before becoming dictators.

Similarly, former Conade leader Manuel Morales argued that Lara displays “authoritarian behavior and thinking that do not align with democracy.” He recalled a phrase by former Uruguayan president José Mujica: “It’s not that power transforms you, but that power shows you who you really are.”

“In this case, just the fact that he already believes he’s in government does not transform him, it shows him for who he really is: an authoritarian who, if granted power, would exercise it in an uncontrolled way. In other words, he would trample democracy. That makes him a latent danger who could, in the future, generate high levels of conflict for Rodrigo Paz’s government if they were to be elected,” Morales told Erbol.

La Paz mayor Iván Arias also reacted, urging Lara to use his head instead of confrontation. “It’s better to have brains instead of balls, and to think that what has been gained could be lost because of this kind of statement and internal controversy with his own presidential candidate,” he told DTV.

He added: “The time has come to use your head, to use empathy, and to hold your tongue. He’s a danger. He’s telling us that, because of supposed attacks from analysts, he’s going to start hunting us down. My God, we have a Luis Arce in the making.”

Analyst Hugo Moldiz, interviewed last week on the program No Mentiras, said: “When you listen to Rodrigo Paz’s vice-presidential candidate, the least you can do is be alarmed or take note that there’s a fascistoid tendency that goes beyond bursts of anger, no matter how he tries to justify them.” In his view, such confrontational rhetoric “once in power, could translate into actions backed by state legitimacy.”
