Public transport drivers arrived today in downtown La Paz with a march and now, at 12:30 p.m., they are holding a rally on Mariscal Santa Cruz Avenue to decide on their next actions.

Santos Escalante, executive secretary of the Federation of Urban Drivers of La Paz Chuquiago Marka, announced that they will request a “direct meeting” with President Luis Arce.

The drivers are protesting the fuel shortage and rejecting Supreme Decree (DS) 5400, which limits the purchase of subsidized gasoline and diesel for vehicles converted to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

“We no longer want meetings with ministers or with the president of YPFB (Armin Dorgathen); on the contrary, we are calling for their resignation. We are going to demand a direct meeting with the president,” said Escalante.

The protest did not include roadblocks; however, it disrupted those who needed to take public transport this morning.

The drivers gathered in El Alto in the morning and marched down toward the center of La Paz. They arrived around 10:45 a.m. near the El Prado promenade. Some pedestrians booed and insulted them.

The march also worsened the usual traffic chaos in the government seat’s downtown area.
