Independent merchants are facing an alarming crisis in Bolivia, with declining sales and a dollar exchange rate exceeding Bs 13.50.

Self-employed merchants in Bolivia are facing a significant crisis. This is due to falling sales and the rising exchange rate of the dollar, which on April 22, 2025, ranges between Bs 13.50 and Bs 13.80. This information was provided by Mercedes Quisbert, executive of the National Confederation of Informal Traders.

Quisbert pointed out that the most affected by this situation are self-employed merchants and importers. The main reason is that bringing goods from abroad has become increasingly expensive. “We are going through a difficult situation; the government knows that there are no job opportunities in Bolivia, and that’s why many people turn to commerce. Trade is growing more every day, and sales are going down,” Quisbert told the media.

Lower purchasing power

The leader also explained that, due to higher prices and lack of money, people are buying less. This has led many merchants to lose their source of income. Quisbert urged the government to take concrete measures to address the economic crisis and the shortage of foreign currency.

Rising unemployment

Quisbert warned that if the economic situation continues as it is, the number of unemployed people in the country will increase. “The situation is difficult in Bolivia; sales are dropping and the dollar keeps rising. At this rate there will be a large number of unemployed people because it’s no longer possible to pay taxes, rent; the situation is becoming more and more concerning for merchants,” she added.

Dollar shortage in the country

The shortage of U.S. dollars in Bolivia is a problem that has persisted since 2023. This has led to the emergence of a parallel market where the currency has been traded above Bs 14, despite the fact that the Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB) maintains it at Bs 6.69.
