The Oruro Carnival attracts tourists from different countries and regions

In addition to being a display of culture and joy, carnival celebrations generate significant economic activity in the regions where they are held. The most prominent events take place in Oruro and Santa Cruz; however, the Chapaco Carnival, as well as the celebrations in La Paz and Cochabamba, also have a strong impact.

For the Oruro Carnival, an economic movement exceeding Bs 380 million is expected, according to the Vice Minister of Tourism, Hiver Flores, who recalled that in the previous year, this festival only reached Bs 280 million due to road blockades.

Flores reported that thousands of tourists arrive in Bolivia for the carnival season, strengthening “domestic tourism” and causing the “economy to diversify,” impacting transportation, hospitality, commerce, the textile sector, and more.

Similarly, the executive of the Instituto Cruceño de Estadística (ICE), Juan Pablo Suárez, estimated last year that the festivities in Santa Cruz generate a multiplier effect, with economic activity exceeding $100 million.

“We are talking about a very large figure, with a significant percentage in the department’s gross domestic product,” said the executive, highlighting that economic activity is not limited to the three days of celebrations and the activities of carnival groups.

In La Paz, the economic movement projected by the municipality is between Bs 60 and 70 million, according to Américo Gemio, Secretary of Cultures, as reported by a state media outlet.

Meanwhile, in Tarija, the 2024 Chapaco Carnival generated nearly Bs 53 million, a figure expected to be surpassed this year.

The economic impact of carnival is also reflected in the spending of families, groups of friends, and even churches, which organize various activities.
