Monitoring System at Lake Uru Uru / Gador

Recent rainfall has benefited Lakes Uru Uru and Poopó, raising hope among nearby communities.

The rain recorded during the first weeks of this year has significantly improved the conditions of Lakes Uru Uru and Poopó. This information was provided by Olson Paravicini, the departmental secretary of Environment, Water, and Mother Earth for the Oruro Governor’s Office.

According to Paravicini, most areas surrounding these bodies of water have become a source of aid and hope for the communities living nearby. However, concerns remain that the rains may cause flooding in other areas or block access to municipalities from the city of Oruro.

Importance of Monitoring

The secretary emphasized the need for constant monitoring to prevent problems related to flooding, overflows, and other issues that may arise during the rainy season. Rainfall is still expected in the Oruro department in the coming weeks.

In the case of Lakes Uru Uru and Poopó, which are Ramsar sites, monitoring is urged, as some areas of Lake Uru Uru have been urbanized, posing potential risks due to soil moisture.

Assessment of the Situation

By the end of January, a more detailed evaluation of the water level increase is expected, especially for Lake Poopó, which has struggled to regain its water levels for years. This lake, the second-largest in Bolivia, was completely dry for an extended period.

Permanent Monitoring

Paravicini assured that permanent monitoring would be implemented and that first-response teams have been trained to handle emergencies related to flooding, rescues, and other incidents. While both lakes in Oruro have benefited from increased water levels, this improvement is still insufficient to restore the living conditions of local residents.
