After it was revealed that former president Evo Morales is being protected by an “elite group” in the tropics of Cochabamba, following reports of an arrest warrant issued against him, Senator Ana María Castillo suggested calling in the Army, if necessary, to enforce the law in the region.

“Some people living in Chapare think they are in a lawless land, but they are completely mistaken. If it requires the Public Prosecutor’s Office to summon the Army, then it must be done because these individuals, or some figures from the tropics, need to understand that there is justice in Bolivia, there are laws, and we are all equal before the law,” Castillo stated, referring to Morales.

This Monday, Tarija’s departmental prosecutor, Sandra Gutiérrez, announced that the Public Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Morales with the crime of aggravated human trafficking for having fathered a child with a minor in 2016. She stated that a judge, during a precautionary hearing, is expected to determine Morales’s legal status.

Gutiérrez also revealed that since early October, an arrest warrant against Morales has been active for this case. However, intelligence personnel reported that it is not possible to apprehend the former president because he is protected in the tropics of Cochabamba.

This Thursday, Vicente Choque, the political secretary of the Six Federations of the Tropics of Cochabamba, warned in an interview with Erbol that “blood will be spilled” if there is an attempt to arrest Morales.

“For the arrest of our brother Evo, surely blood will be spilled, and we want to affirm that. It won’t be easy. If the government wants to arrest him, we have elite security, of course, vigils; so, if they dare to apprehend him, it will cost them dearly,” said Choque.

Since it became known in October that there was an arrest warrant against him, Morales has not left the tropics of Cochabamba, his stronghold, where he has continued to participate in various meetings.

“The threats made by some leaders only show that there is a group they call elite, which I call a criminal group, that continues to commit crimes. Within that criminal group, there are delinquents who are not being prosecuted and are not responding to justice,” Senator Castillo added.

In this regard, she reiterated that authorities tasked with apprehending Morales should, if necessary, involve the Army to enforce the law against groups or cartels that protect criminals and drug traffickers in Chapare.
