The president of the National Chamber of the Oilseed Industry, Jorge Amantegui, regretted that the government is penalizing the sector by banning exports, even though the authorities themselves confirmed that they bear no responsibility for the shortage of cooking oil.

On Thursday, the Minister of Productive Development, Néstor Huanca, announced the temporary suspension of edible oil exports until the domestic supply, particularly in the western regions, is normalized.

This decision was made despite authorities previously verifying that the oil industry has sufficient surpluses to meet national demand. The issue appears to lie elsewhere within the supply chain.

“A measure that truly lacks consistency, because everything on our part had been verified and was in order. The problem is not with us, yet the penalty is directed at us. We feel very mistreated by this matter,” Amantegui expressed in an interview with Fides.

Industrial representatives held an emergency meeting where they rejected the authorities’ decision, arguing that penalizing producers is unreasonable when the issue lies with the distributors.

“It’s a very irrational measure because we are talking about edible oil shortages, but they have suspended exports of all types of oil. For instance, crude soybean oil, which is not consumed as food, has also been banned. This seems more like punishment than a rationally thought-out measure,” denounced the president of the National Chamber of the Oilseed Industry.
