Around two thousand coca growers loyal to leader and former president Evo Morales violently took over the Cacique Maraza Regiment in District 8 of Villa Tunari on Friday. They even entered the military facility’s armory and took at least 20 people hostage, including both soldiers and civilians.
A report from Red Uno indicates that the coca growers took a group of soldiers, both men and women, as hostages and managed to enter a room containing military weaponry.
The incident occurred at eight in the morning this Friday when the “evistas” learned that military and police forces had started to clear the blockades in the Pirque Parotani area, the “headquarters” of the mobilized supporters of their leader, Morales.
“They’ve cut off our water and electricity, and they’ve taken us as hostages; we demand a solution, that they stop intervening in the blockades of Parotani and other areas, as the lives of my instructors and soldiers are in danger,” said a soldier who was allowed to record a message addressed to senior military command.
Minutes before news broke of the military barracks being taken, the second secretary of the “evista” faction of the Confederación Sindical Única de Trabajadores Campesinos de Bolivia (CSUTCB), Humberto Claros, had warned that several military units would be taken as soon as the clearing operations began in Pirque Parotani, including the Army’s Ninth Division, located in Lauca Ñ.
“If the military and police intervention in Pirque Parotani happens, they will definitely take not only the Ninth Division but also other military units in Santa Cruz and the Chimoré area. They will seize them, and the government needs to know this,” he warned in statements to Radio Panamericana.

Unos dos mil cocaleros afines al dirigente y expresidente Evo Morales tomaron este viernes de forma violenta el Regimiento Cacique Maraza, en el Distrito 8 de Villa Tunari. Ingresaron, incluso, a la sala de armas del recinto militar y tomaron como rehenes al menos a unas 20 personas, entre militares y civiles.
Un reporte de la red Uno indica que los cocaleros tomaron como rehenes a un grupo de militares, hombres y mujeres, y lograron ingresar hasta una sala donde hay armamento militar.
El hecho sucedió a las ocho de la mañana de este viernes, cuando los “evistas” se enteraron que fuerzas militares y policiales comenzaron a desbloquear la zona de Pirque Parotani, el “cuartel” de los movilizados que respaldan a su líder, Morales.
“Nos han cortado el agua, la luz y nos han tomado como rehenes, pedimos una solución, que no intervengan los bloqueos de Parotani y otros, ya que la vida de mis instructores y soldados están en peligro”, dijo un militar al que se le permitió grabar un mensaje dirigido a los altos mandos militares.
Minutos antes de que se conozca la toma del cuartel militar, el segundo secretario de la Confederación Sindical Única de Trabajadores Campesinos de Bolivia (CSUTCB) del ala “evista”, Humberto Claros, había advertido que se tomarían varias unidades militares inmediatamente comience el desbloqueo en la zona de Pirque Parotani, entre ellas la Novena División del Ejército, que se encuentra en Lauca Ñ.
“De producirse la intervención militar policial en Pirque Parotani, van a tomar definitivamente y no solamente la Novena División, sino otras unidades militares en Santa Cruz y la parte de Chimoré. Van a tomar y eso el Gobierno tiene que saberlo”, advirtó en declaraciones a radio Panamericana.
