An inspection by Potosí departmental assembly member Azucena Fuertes at the Kari Kari basin, where the reservoirs supplying potable water to the population are located, revealed evidence of illegal mining activity.

“We observed active mining operations from the peak down to the rear area,” stated the assembly member.

Fuertes noted that during the inspection, they noticed an unauthorized checkpoint to control vehicle access, several compressors, a mine entrance, and drilled sections on the ground.

“The question is who is authorizing mining operations in Kari Kari,” she said, urging the Administrative Mining Jurisdictional Authority (Ajam) to proceed with the immediate closure of this mine entrance, which was clandestinely reopened.

She added that a loading list for extraction was seen, which, she said, would confirm reports indicating that clandestine mining activities are occurring at night.

The inspection was conducted jointly with the Secretary of Mother Earth from the Potosí Governor’s Office.
