Two journalists suffered attacks during protests led by supporters of Evo Morales and Luis Arce on Tuesday, which resulted in a clash between militants in the community of Vila Vila. A journalist from Cadena A, based in Oruro, was brutally beaten, and another reporter from SEO TV was forced to stop his broadcast, effectively being censored live.

In response to this situation, the National Association of Journalists of Bolivia (ANPB) and the Association of Journalists of La Paz (APLP) “demanded respect and guarantees for the freedoms of expression, press, and information,” according to a statement released by these organizations.

The Press Workers’ Union of Oruro, through a statement, described the way journalist Irene Torrez from Cadena A was attacked. “She was brutally assaulted with blows from sticks, kicks, and shoves while covering the protests,” the statement said.

It added that “the cowardly and savage behavior of a group of men against a female journalist took place near the community of Vila Vila, where, as in the times of dictatorship, after beating her, they attempted to seize her working tool, her cellphone, but when she resisted, the thugs forced her to delete the videos she had recorded.”

The assaulted journalist, through her Facebook account, reported the attack. “The intolerance towards women in journalism has become alarming. It is unacceptable that in moments of vulnerability, some men feel entitled to attack and degrade. Recently, I was a victim of this violence while documenting reality in Vila Vila,” Torrez said.

She added that she would continue with her work “as long as God allows me, committed to showing reality. The cowardice of some ‘men’ will not stop us.”

Meanwhile, a journalist from SEO TV who was also reporting from Vila Vila was forced to cut his broadcast under threats.

“In light of actions against the freedoms of expression and the press that have started to appear amid the internal struggle within the ruling party, the National Association of Journalists of Bolivia (ANPB) and the Association of Journalists of La Paz (APLP) remind authorities and mobilized social sectors that the Political Constitution of the State and the Press Law guarantee the freedom of information and prohibit any form of censorship,” the journalists’ associations stated.

They added that “those who assume the authority to restrict or threaten journalistic work will be subject to the penalties provided for violations of constitutional rights.”

In this context, “the ANPB and the APLP demand that government entities comply with and enforce legal provisions aimed at ensuring the performance of journalistic work and citizens’ access to news information.”

The Ombudsman’s Office also reported the obstruction of press work, as well as intimidation and physical assaults on journalists from SEO TV and Cadena A.

Supporters of Evo Morales began a protest march from Caracollo on Monday with the intention of reaching La Paz. However, on Tuesday in Vila Vila, the marchers were met by supporters of President Luis Arce, which led to clashes. It was in this context that the attacks on journalists occurred.
