The Río La Paz overflowed and affected the Amor de Dios area.

The rainfall recorded in recent days caused the overflowing of several rivers that severely affected the inhabitants of several municipalities in the departments of La Paz, Cochabamba, and Santa Cruz, with the city of La Paz being the most affected with the fatal toll of one person deceased and considerable material damage.

The incident occurred in the Achumani neighborhood, in the south of the La Paz urban area, and also affected some high neighborhoods in the areas of Huayllani and Ch’ijipata, due to a torrential rain that fell between Friday night and yesterday morning, according to reports.

The overflow caused the death of one person and hundreds of meters of debris and stones that, with the force of the water, destroyed the walls of some houses, parks, and several streets were damaged by mud.

Subsequently, in response to requests from residents and authorities, through Municipal Resolution 0170/2024 and signed last night by Mayor Iván Arias, the Municipal Autonomous Government of La Paz declared a state of emergency for three basins and the rural macro-district of Zongo. Likewise, it is requested to “manage with the Municipal Council of La Paz the delegation of approval of external and internal donation agreements”.

In the capital of Santa Cruz, the rise of the Río Grande threatens the dike in Montero Hoyos and raises alarm among residents, so machinery has been deployed from Searpi and contingency plans are being prepared in case of an emergency. In the last hours, the river level reached 3.5 meters, according to Unitel’s report. Meanwhile, in Cochabamba, the Río Tolavi overflowed and flooded streets and at least four houses in the municipality of Tiquipaya. Districts 1 and 2, north of the city, were left without drinking water service after a pipeline was damaged by the overflow in the municipality of Tiquipaya.

Several houses in the southern zone were affected by the water and mud.
