The Oruro Carnival 2024 has begun with the pilgrimage to the Virgin of Candelaria del Socavón, highlighting the devotion, joy and cultural diversity that characterize this festivity

Today, in the city of Oruro, the long-awaited Carnival 2024 began with the entry of Pilgrimage Saturday, an event that marks the beginning of Carnival in the city. On their knees, the dancers complete the pilgrimage for the ‘Mamita del Socavón’ in the church of the same name, where they go to thank her for all her blessings and protection. It is the most intimate moment in which each pilgrim expresses his faith and devotion to the K’achamoza. He prays for his loved ones, for his family and that in a year she allows him to return to her feet.
The dancers are not only from Oruro, there are from different corners of the country, because the miraculous ‘mommy’ is in their hearts and they come year after year in demonstration of their gratitude towards her.
From 7:00 in the morning, the streets of this folkloric capital were filled with life, color and music, with the participation of thousands of dancers and musicians who gathered to pay tribute to the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the city.
The entry of Pilgrimage Saturday also coincides with the 243rd anniversary of the department of Oruro, adding a special meaning to the festival.
Among the participants, there are around 50 thousand dancers and about 20 thousand musicians, who began their journey through the roads set up for the entrance, bringing with them all the splendor and devotion that characterize this celebration. The diablada, one of the most emblematic dances of Carnival, once again shined, delighting spectators with its spectacularity and energy.
Yolanda Mamani, correspondent for El Deber, shared her testimony from the very heart of the festivity, describing the atmosphere of joy and excitement that is experienced in the streets of Oruro during Carnival. “It is a very beautiful and joyful tour,” commented Mamani, highlighting the devotion and enthusiasm of the participants. “People get excited, from the stands they sing with the fraternities, they dance, they shout.” She added.
The Oruro Carnival is distinguished by the participation of 52 fraternities of folk groups, each with its own style and traditions. These fraternities are divided into five blocks, each headed by a different diablada. In addition, other unofficial fraternities participate in the tour, further enriching the cultural diversity of the festival.
During the pilgrimage day, strict control measures were implemented to prevent the consumption of alcoholic beverages, especially among the dancers. However, alcohol consumption by spectators is common. Dancers can only consume alcoholic beverages after finishing the tour and leaving the Socavón.
The pilgrimage route extends for more than four kilometers, culminating in the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Socavón, where participants express their faith and devotion to the patron saint of the city.
The festivity will continue until early Sunday morning, when dawn is celebrated, a tradition that returns after several years. At dawn, musicians play in unison as the sun rises, symbolizing the reception of solar energy and the beginning of a new day of celebration.
The prices of seats on the stages vary depending on their location, with packages ranging between Bs 000 and Bs200, offering options for all budgets.
A high influx of national and foreign tourists is expected during the festival, there are normally thousands of visitors during the 3 days of festivities, thus contributing to the economic dynamism of the region and the strengthening of cultural tourism in Bolivia.

Hoy, en la ciudad de Oruro, se dio comienzo al esperado Carnaval 2024 con la entrada del Sábado de Peregrinación, un evento que marca el inicio del Carnaval en la ciudad. De rodillas, los bailarines culminan la peregrinación por la ‘Mamita del Socavón’ en la iglesia del mismo nombre, hasta donde llegan para agradecerle por todas sus bendiciones y protección. Es el momento más íntimo en que cada peregrino expresa su fe y devoción a la K’achamoza. Se pide por los suyos, por la familia y que al año le permita volver a sus pies.
Los danzarines no solo son orureños, los hay de distintos rincones del país, porque la ‘mamita’ milagrosa está en sus corazones y ellos llegan año a año en demostración de su agradecimiento hacia ella.
Desde las 7:00 de la mañana, las calles de esta capital folclórica se llenaron de vida, color y música, con la participación de miles de bailarines y músicos que se congregaron para rendir homenaje a la Virgen de la Candelaria, patrona de la ciudad.
La entrada del Sábado de Peregrinación coincide además con el 243 aniversario del departamento de Oruro, agregando un significado especial a la festividad.
Entre los participantes, se contabilizan alrededor de 50 mil bailarines y unos 20 mil músicos, quienes comenzaron su recorrido por las vías habilitadas para la entrada, llevando consigo todo el esplendor y la devoción que caracterizan a esta celebración. La diablada, uno de los bailes más emblemáticos del Carnaval, una vez más se lució, deleitando a los espectadores con su espectacularidad y energía.
Yolanda Mamani, corresponsal de El Deber, compartió su testimonio desde el corazón mismo de la festividad, describiendo la atmósfera de alegría y emoción que se vive en las calles de Oruro durante el Carnaval. “Es un recorrido muy bonito y alegre“, comentó Mamani, resaltando la devoción y el entusiasmo de los participantes. “La gente se emociona, desde las graderías cantan con las fraternidades, bailan, gritan.”, añadió.
El Carnaval de Oruro se distingue por la participación de 52 fraternidades de conjuntos folclóricos, cada una con su propio estilo y tradiciones. Estas fraternidades se dividen en cinco bloques, cada uno encabezado por una diablada distinta. Además, se suman otras fraternidades no oficiales que participan en el recorrido, enriqueciendo aún más la diversidad cultural de la festividad.
Durante la jornada de peregrinación, se implementaron estrictas medidas de control para evitar el consumo de bebidas alcohólicas, especialmente entre los bailarines. Sin embargo, es común el consumo de alcohol por parte de los espectadores. Los danzarines solo pueden consumir bebidas alcohólicas al terminar el recorrido y salir del Socavón.
El recorrido de la peregrinación se extiende por más de cuatro kilómetros, culminando en el Santuario de la Virgen del Socavón, donde los participantes expresan su fe y devoción a la patrona de la ciudad.
La festividad continuará hasta la madrugada del domingo, cuando se celebre el alba, una tradición que retorna después de varios años. Durante el alba, los músicos tocan al unísono mientras sale el sol, simbolizando la recepción de energía solar y el inicio de un nuevo día de celebración.
Los precios de los asientos en las tarimas varían según su ubicación, con paquetes que oscilan entre Bs1000 y Bs200, ofreciendo opciones para todos los presupuestos.
Se espera una alta afluencia de turistas nacionales y extranjeros durante la festividad, normalmente se cuentan miles de visitante durante los 3 días de festividades, contribuyendo así al dinamismo económico de la región y al fortalecimiento del turismo cultural en Bolivia.
