They identify at least five species of birds in danger of extinction in Bolivia

The director of the Armonía Association, Rodrigo Soria, explains that endemic birds have a restricted geographical distribution and this is linked to their movement capabilities and/or ecological requirements.

According to the Armonía Association, at least five species of birds in danger of extinction were identified in the country. These animals “are a vehicle in the protection of nature,” which is why it is urgent to implement “effective” conservation measures.

“Currently Bolivia has 16 endemic species, of which five species are in critical danger of extinction: Palkachupa (Phibalura boliviana), Stone-crested Guan (Pauxi unicornis), Riberalta Tororoi (Hylopezus auricularis), Blue-throated Paraba (Ara glaucogularis) and Red-fronted Macaw (Ara rubrogenys),” said that institution in a report.

The director of the Armonía Association, Rodrigo Soria, explains that endemic birds have a restricted geographical distribution and this is linked to their movement capabilities and/or ecological requirements.

“When a species becomes extinct it is because its habitat can no longer support the existence of that bird and consequently the functions of the ecosystems of the area where it lived do not exist either. That puts even the life of the human being with whom he shares the living space at risk,” he warns.

According to data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Bolivia stands out as the sixth country with the greatest diversity of birds worldwide and the fifth richest territory in bird species that does not have a coast, housing 1,445 species, among them 16 endemic species that only live in Bolivian territory.

In this regard, the Armonía Association assures that at least 48 of these species face threats in the short and medium term and highlights the urgency of implementing effective conservation measures.

“The loss of a species represents a chain of consequences, mostly unpredictable, for biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems, which is why the presence of birds is considered an indicator of the good state of conservation of a habitat,” he points out.

Faced with these challenges, the need arises to develop projects for the protection of birds. The Conserva Aves initiative aims to achieve the long-term conservation of these species, biodiversity and ecosystem functions in nine Latin American countries, from Mexico to Chile.

Through calls for financing conservation projects, the creation and expansion of subnational protected areas is sought. These spaces are vital, since the life of these birds depends directly on the care and preservation of these areas.

The Conserva Aves program aims to protect these endemic birds of Bolivia, birds that are in some category of threat and boreal migratory birds.
