With the aim of revaluing rurality through youth leadership, the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) awarded, at its headquarters in Rome, a young Bolivian winner of the “Rural YouTubers and TikTokers” contest.

“These talented content creators have managed to stand out in a universe of more than 2,400 rural young people trained in digital skills and will now be able to further develop their ventures,” indicates an institutional report.

During the awards ceremony at IFAD headquarters in Rome, it was possible to learn first-hand about the life stories and purpose of the winners: Román Rojas, from Colombia; Mayra Pinto, from Honduras; and Shakira Chura, from Bolivia. These are new and talented content creators who are committed to sharing the potential and challenges of their communities to promote sustainable development.

The videos produced by the young people, who placed first in this competition, reflect their life experiences and their connection to rural areas.

In a creative way they managed to explain issues related to diverse and complementary areas, such as food production, gastronomy, culture and tourism.

In addition, they highlighted the role of the peasant and indigenous communities in achieving food security.

Young rural voices for the world

“Our communities offer many opportunities, but they are not very visible, and that is why we want to show what they produce, their gastronomy, their culture, their clothing, and disseminate this content on social networks,” said Shakira Chura, when attending the awards event.

The “Rural YouTubers and TikTokers” workshop and contest is an initiative that is part of the activities of the Puentes project, which is implemented by ICCO Cooperación/Conexión and financed by IFAD.

With a total investment of 2.3 million euros, Puentes managed to generate opportunities for more than 4,000 young people in Bolivia, Colombia and Honduras. “The project has promoted the economic empowerment of young people and the integration of rural and urban areas through development of technical and social capacities to promote good nutrition, the creation of decent jobs and the establishment of sustainable enterprises in the gastronomy and hospitality sectors,” said IFAD Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Rossana Polastri.
