They were waved goodbye amid applause by authorities, volunteers and community members

The expected moment arrived. Yesterday, Sunday, at the top of the highest hill in the community of Cororo, municipality of Tarabuco, the condors Bárbara and Santiago opened their wings towards freedom amid applause and smiles, after nine days of recovery from a suspected poisoning. At what stage is the process of investigating the case by the Public Ministry?

CORREO DEL SUR accompanied minute by minute the emotional act, which included the participation of departmental authorities, animal volunteers and more than fifty local community members.

María Porcel, a leader from Cororo, was the first person to inform the authorities about the condors. She told this newspaper that the event became known on the afternoon of Friday, July 22, when a community member, going out to look for his cattle, ran into these birds.

According to her account, it happened at approximately 18:30. “He (the community member) returned to the town around 7:30 p.m. and he came directly to my house and told me that there were several dead condors and others that were ill,” she said.

Porcel clarified that the place where the birds were found does not belong to Cororo but to a neighboring community, Vila Vila.

Despite constant calls to the Police, Tarabuco authorities and other departments, no one came to the scene that day. But, at such insistence, on Saturday the 23rd a police officer and a councilman arrived who, realizing the seriousness of what had happened, requested the presence of the Public Ministry.

NINE CONDORS

The authorities and the community members affirmed that there were nine condors, of which six were already dead, another was not caught and two were transferred to Sucre due to the complexity of their health condition.

The Prosecutor’s Office reported an alleged poisoning since they found a dead dog with half of the body exposed and decomposing at the scene.

RECOVERY

Since that day, Bárbara and Santiago, names with which they were baptized by the students of the Biology career of San Francisco Xavier in honor of the patron saint of Cororo, Santa Bárbara and Tata Santiago, respectively, were subjected to a rehabilitation process. under the care of volunteers from the Animal Protector S.A., veterinarians and biologists, who contributed their knowledge free of charge.

After their favorable recovery, half a week later they were discharged and admitted to an observation period in charge of volunteers and university students. After making sure that they were no longer in any danger, they decided to return them to their natural habitat this Sunday.

TRIP

At 9:30 this Sunday, Bárbara and Santiago were put into two vans of the Forest Police and Environmental Preservation (Pofoma), heading to the area where they were recovered. After traveling more than an hour and a half, they arrived in Cororo, the place chosen for their release.

Upon their arrival, they were received by authorities, including the governor of Chuquisaca, Damián Condori, and by more than fifty community members who also helped carry them to the top of the highest hill in the community.

Fueron despedidos en medio de aplausos por autoridades, voluntarios y comunarios

El momento esperado llegó. Ayer, domingo, en la cima del cerro más alto de la comunidad de Cororo, municipio de Tarabuco, los cóndores Bárbara y Santiago abrieron sus alas hacia la libertad en medio de aplausos y sonrisas, tras nueve días de recuperación de un presunto envenenamiento. ¿En qué etapa está el proceso de investigación del caso por el Ministerio Público?

CORREO DEL SUR acompañó minuto a minuto el emotivo acto, que contó con la participación de autoridades departamentales, voluntarios animalistas y más de medio centenar de comunarios del lugar.

María Porcel, una dirigente de Cororo, fue la primera persona que dio parte a las autoridades sobre los cóndores. Contó a este diario que el hecho se conoció la tarde del viernes 22 de julio, cuando un comunario, al salir a buscar su ganado, se topó con estas aves.

Según su relato, ocurrió aproximadamente a las 18:30. “Él (el comunario) volvió al pueblo como a las 19:30 y directamente vino a mi casa y me avisó que habían varios cóndores muertos y otros mal”, dijo.

Porcel aclaró que el lugar donde se encontraron las aves no pertenece a Cororo sino a una comunidad vecina, Vila Vila.

Pese a constantes llamadas a la Policía, a autoridades de Tarabuco y a otras departamentales, nadie acudió al lugar ese día. Pero, a tanta insistencia, el sábado 23 llegaron un efectivo policial y un concejal quienes, al percatarse de la gravedad de lo sucedido, solicitaron la presencia del Ministerio Público.

NUEVE CÓNDORES

Las autoridades y los comunarios afirmaron que había nueve cóndores, de los cuales seis ya estaban muertos, otro no se dejó atrapar y dos fueron trasladados a Sucre por la complejidad de su estado de salud.

La Fiscalía informó de un presunto envenenamiento ya que en el lugar encontraron un perro muerto con la mitad del cuerpo expuesto y en descomposición.

RECUPERACIÓN

Desde ese día, Bárbara y Santiago, nombres con los que fueron bautizados por los estudiantes de la carrera de Biología de San Francisco Xavier en honor a la patrona de Cororo, Santa Bárbara y al Tata Santiago, respectivamente, fueron sometidos a un proceso de rehabilitación al cuidado de voluntarios de la Protectora de Animales S.A., veterinarios y biólogos, quienes aportaron su conocimiento de forma gratuita.

Luego de su recuperación favorable, a media semana se les dio el alta e ingresaron en un tiempo de observación a cargo de los voluntarios y universitarios. Tras cerciorarse de que ya no corrían ningún peligro, decidieron devolverlos a su hábitat natural este domingo.

EL VIAJE

A las 9:30 de este domingo, Bárbara y Santiago fueron subidos a dos camionetas de la Policía Forestal y Preservación del Medio Ambiente (Pofoma), rumbo a la zona donde fueron recuperados. Después de más de una hora y media de viaje arribaron a Cororo, lugar elegido para su liberación.

A su llegada fueron recibidos por autoridades, entre ellos el gobernador de Chuquisaca, Damián Condori, y por más de medio centenar de comunarios y quienes también ayudaron a cargarlos hasta la cima del cerro más alto de la comunidad.
