Monday briefs: A H1N1; TIPNIS; blockades; copper mega mine

Flu, A H1H1: Health Minister, Nila Heredia reported for this year four deaths as of Monday, October 10; and around 600 cases that tested positive to the virus A H1N1 in Bolivia. Heredia explained that number of people sick with this flu was as a result of high concentrations of people during the Fexpo in Santa Cruz last month. She also said that by not having school classes, there were fewer people sick last week.

Road blockades: In Potosi, Oruro and Cochabamba roads were blocked by groups of miners who do not want to pay taxes… yes you read taxes! Miners do not want to pay the 13% tax called IVA. What is frustrating to all those Bolivians and visitors today is that they cannot go from La Paz to Potosi, Sucre or Tarija, nor they can connect with Cochabamba, Santa Cruz and Beni. What is also frustrating is to read that the government says they will nullify this tax… so, why do blockades now, why people do not want to pay taxes… but keep demanding public services right, left and center?
