Bolivian turmoil status: El Alto; Potosi; Tarija; Airports

  • El Alto: PAT channel reported early this morning that last night, El Alto leaders have met with some government officials and will consult their “bases” today around 10:00 am. They will decide if they go at 16:00 hours to meet with the government. In the meantime blockade continues for the remaining of this morning.
  • Potosi: Civic Committee decided to meet today with the government, they will held a Cabildo (public meeting) on August 30, 2011. Until then, they remain is a “state of emergency.”

  • Tarija: Yunchara community was blocking the road; Mendez municipality. Because of that an ambulance could not go through and a child died because he did not receive medical attention. Today, other groups will also blockade the roads; groups are demanding that the Departmental Assembly approves the regulations for the Solidarity Program (ProSol) which is a bonus. Current Governor (the elected had to seek political asylum in Paraguay, as he claimed political persecution) who belongs to current political party in the national government, wants to increase the bonus from Bs2,000 to Bs4,500.

  • Airports: Employees from AASANA, who administers the 38 airports in Bolivia is planning a 24 hour strike on August 24, 2011. They are asking for the dismissal of current Executive Director, Raul Velasco Ramos.
