LA PAZ, Bolivia — An iconic moreno mask, one of the most recognizable symbols of Bolivia’s traditional Morenada dance, was permanently installed Friday in a popular urban park in La Paz as part of an initiative to bring cultural heritage and art into public spaces. EFE

The unveiling took place at the Parque de las Culturas y la Madre Tierra in northern La Paz, with representatives from the state-owned Mi Teleférico cable car system and the Cultural Revolution Center (CRC), which operates under the Cultural Foundation of Bolivia’s Central Bank.

CRC Director Marianela España said the mask will remain on permanent display for both Bolivian visitors and foreign tourists traveling through the city’s cable car network.

The artwork was previously featured in a 2021 exhibition honoring the Morenada, one of the principal dances of the Feast of the Lord Jesus of Great Power (Gran Poder), a celebration recognized by UNESCO in 2019 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Created by artisans Gualberto and Raúl Condori, a father-and-son team from a family long dedicated to crafting folkloric masks, the piece depicts the traditional moreno character from the colonial era, with a long white beard, bulging eyes and a pipe.

The Morenada dance commemorates the experiences of enslaved Africans brought to the Bolivian highlands during colonial times. Dancers wear heavy costumes and perform a slow, side-to-side step that symbolizes physical exhaustion.

Gonzalo Cruz, president of the Association of Folkloric Mask Artisans, said the dance reflects the hardships faced by Africans who arrived in the mining region of Potosí and later settled in the Yungas region of La Paz.

During the ceremony, Cultural Foundation President Alejandra Echazú emphasized that while the moreno figure is an important part of Bolivia’s historical and cultural legacy, it should not be viewed as a representation with which Afro-Bolivian communities identify.

She said recognizing that distinction is essential to preserving Bolivia’s heritage with respect while honoring the living cultural traditions passed down through generations of mask makers.

The exhibition comes just days before this year’s Gran Poder festivities, now scheduled for Aug. 1 after being postponed from late May due to social unrest that affected La Paz through much of May and June.

Often called the “Great Festival of the Andes,” Gran Poder is one of Bolivia’s largest and most significant cultural celebrations. EFE
