“Let Us Work!”: The Plea of Women Gathered Outside the COB Emergency Meeting Venue

The group that arrived at the factory union headquarters in Miraflores merely voiced the feelings of many citizens who are struggling to secure food, especially in the La Paz basin and in the city of El Alto.

“Let us work!” was the heartfelt plea of a group of women who spontaneously gathered this Sunday outside the venue hosting the emergency assembly of the Bolivian Workers’ Central (COB) in the city of La Paz.

Holding signs and speaking through tears, the women demanded opportunities for the country and its people, who have been suffocated by road blockades and protests that have now lasted a month.

One of the women who spoke said that she is both mother and father to her children and that she has spent weeks struggling to put food on her family’s table.

Another stated: “The COB does not represent me; it does not feed me.” A third added: “We are also fighting for the farmers, so they won’t settle for handouts and won’t allow themselves to be deceived.”

This day is crucial for the country’s pacification, as COB members must decide the future of their mobilizations and whether they will agree to dialogue with the government or continue demanding the resignation of President Rodrigo Paz.

The group that gathered at the factory headquarters in Miraflores merely expressed the sentiments of many citizens who are finding ways to obtain food, particularly in the La Paz basin and in the city of El Alto.
