Due to the military aircraft accident in the city of El Alto, the Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB) has decided to invalidate the legal tender status of the Bs 10, Bs 20, and Bs 50 banknotes from the new Series B; therefore, this currency has no validity.

In this regard, the Central Bank informed that “individuals who possess Bs 10, Bs 20, and Bs 50 Series B banknotes that were legally obtained through any type of transaction may exchange them within the financial system for others of equal value according to a calendar that the BCB will announce shortly.”

In other words, they may go to banks to exchange them according to a timetable that will be published in the coming hours.

The BCB assured that it has the identification and numbering of all Bs 10, Bs 20, and Bs 50 Series B banknotes corresponding to the New Family of Boliviano Banknotes that circulate legally.

“Under no circumstances will individuals who possess those banknotes lose their value,” it emphasized.

Invalidation

The military aircraft that crashed in El Alto was transporting banknotes from the new series from Santa Cruz to the city of La Paz.

Following the accident, a crowd of people approached the crashed aircraft to “steal” the banknotes which — according to the BCB — have no legal value.

“Effective immediately, the Bs 10, Bs 20, and Bs 50 Series B banknotes corresponding to the New Family of Boliviano Banknotes cease to have legal tender status,” states a communiqué from the issuing authority.

“All banknotes of those denominations are therefore disabled for use and circulation,” it adds.

Likewise, the issuing authority reported that “the Bs 10, Bs 20, and Bs 50 Series B banknotes corresponding to the New Family of Boliviano Banknotes that were aboard the aircraft involved in the accident in El Alto are duly numbered and identified; therefore, if their holders attempt to circulate them or introduce them into the financial system, they will be subject to the sanctions established by law.”

Based on these circumstances, the BCB recommended that the population “refrain from using Bs 10, Bs 20, and Bs 50 Series B banknotes corresponding to the New Family of Boliviano Banknotes.”

The BCB indicated that it will immediately launch an informational campaign to guide the public on how to identify banknotes of these denominations so that no doubts exist in this regard.
