Passenger service between Santa Cruz and Puerto Quijarro will resume with a 42-seat railbus. The reactivation will be evaluated over six months and seeks to consolidate the Chiquitania route as a railway tourism circuit of more than 650 kilometers.

The government confirmed this Saturday that the return of the passenger train to the Chiquitania will be through a tourist railbus that will initially operate for six months, according to an official report released by the Ministry of Public Works.

The service, suspended for six years, will reconnect Santa Cruz with the Brazilian border starting February 27 through the network of Ferroviaria Oriental S.A., which also operates the route to Yacuiba, on the Argentine border.

“A 42-passenger tourist railbus will once again run along the Chiquitania route,” the official statement highlights, detailing that the reactivation aims to boost tourism, improve connectivity, and energize the regional economy in this part of the department of Santa Cruz.

According to government information, the resumption of the service responds to a request from civic committees and lawmakers from the Chiquitania area and was managed by the Minister of Public Works, Mauricio Zamora, in coordination with the Telecommunications and Transport Regulation and Supervision Authority (ATT). The measure falls within the State’s powers to guarantee strategic transport services.

“The service will be operated by Ferroviaria Oriental S.A., which will put into operation a modern railbus with comfort and safety standards, intended to strengthen the integration of the eastern part of the department of Santa Cruz and to consolidate a railway tourism circuit in the region,” the ministry emphasized.

The route will depart from the city of Santa Cruz and pass through San José, Roboré, Chochís, Aguas Calientes, Carmen Rivero Tórrez, Puerto Suárez, and Puerto Quijarro, linking destinations of high historical, cultural, and natural value, such as the Jesuit missions and the Bolivian Pantanal.

“More than bringing good news, it is joint work,” said Minister Zamora. The authority added that the initiative follows the guidelines of President Rodrigo Paz, aimed at strengthening territorial integration and positioning tourism as a strategic axis for economic growth.

The service will have an initial six-month character. During that period, continuous evaluations will be carried out on occupancy rates and passenger demand, taking into account that low usage was one of the factors that led to suspension in previous administrations.

“After six years without railway transport from Santa Cruz to its province, it returns. This February, passenger transport on the railway network is reactivated,” stressed the president of the Pro Santa Cruz Civic Committee, Stello Cochamanidis, at a Friday press conference, where he also thanked the minister for his efforts.

Although authorities did not mention the schedule or ticket prices, they said these will be defined by the ATT in coordination with the railway company and assured that they will be below the fares currently charged by buses traveling the Bioceanic Highway.

Ferroviaria Oriental has two refurbished and reconditioned railbuses, originally manufactured by Ferrostaal, which also offer onboard food and beverage service for passengers.

The railway route between Santa Cruz and Puerto Quijarro exceeds 650 kilometers and requires at least 12 hours of travel. It should be noted that passenger service to eastern Santa Cruz was suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic, although freight train operations remained unchanged.
