Highlighting that government authorities have expressed openness to improving the content of Supreme Decree 5503 after listening to observations from various sectors, the representative of the United Evangelical Churches of Bolivia, Luis Aruquipa, criticized the leadership of the Bolivian Workers’ Center (COB) for maintaining an intransigent position aligned with the political interests of the governments of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS).

In statements to the press, Aruquipa reported that the initial meetings between authorities and representatives of sectors affected by the measures set out in DS-5503 demonstrated the central government’s willingness to review, refine, and, if necessary, repeal some provisions of this regulation. Therefore, there are no grounds for the COB to radicalize its actions by demanding a total repeal.

He also questioned the “cobista” union leadership for maintaining an intransigent stance toward the current government, after having been one of the sectors that benefited the most during the twenty years of the Movement Toward Socialism in power.

“The ministers have accepted repealing some articles questioned by market vendors, workers, doctors, professionals, neighborhood councils, and others such as the churches, but not the abrogation of Supreme Decree 5503,” he emphasized.

In his view, the current situation calls for improving the regulation rather than generating unnecessary social unrest through pressure measures; therefore, all mobilizations called by a “Masista” Workers’ Center that only defends its own interests should be rejected.

“For more than twenty years they sold themselves to Masismo and benefited from governments from which they received vehicles, properties, and other benefits. Now, when they are told ‘enough,’ they mobilize sectors that are unaware of the content of the decree they supposedly oppose,” Aruquipa stated, reiterating that authorities are open to repealing and improving some articles.
