The Minister of Economy, José Gabriel Espinoza, announced this Thursday the “reformulation of the 2026 Budget.” The objective is to adjust the plan, approved by the previous government of Luis Arce, to the economic reality of the country. The task will be led by the new Vice Minister of Budget and Fiscal Accounting, Jaime Coronado, who was sworn in on Thursday afternoon along with Cristhian Andrés Morales, Vice Minister of Treasury and Public Credit.

Espinoza stated that the country is facing a complex outlook after having received “broken public finances” and a “shattered institutional framework.” “We must work on a budget that addresses people’s basic needs—health, education, security—and that enables investment, but at the same time eliminates waste and applies austerity, because the big problem we have today is that a lot is spent for the benefit of a few, creating difficulties for the economy of many,” the minister said.

In this regard, he explained that Coronado must “translate” the decisions made by the Executive into the operational level to ensure they are carried out in the best possible manner for the population.

According to current regulations, the General State Budget must be submitted to the Legislative Assembly for its corresponding analysis. The previous administration had advanced that task.

In an interview with Visión 360, Espinoza explained that time is working against the current Government as it seeks to reformulate the budget. However, he added that this is one of the priorities.

In that sense, during Thursday’s ceremony, he stressed that the reformulation process must be carried out with criteria of transparency, responsibility and commitment.

In his remarks, Espinoza also mentioned that during the past twenty years the State budget had been “politicized and misused.” This is what he wants to avoid, turning it instead into “a commitment between the Government and citizens to know where the money each person pays in taxes is going.”
