President-elect Rodrigo Paz admitted that he has spoken with leaders such as Nayib Bukele, Venezuelan political leader María Corina Machado, as well as the government of the United States.

In an interview granted to Fox News, Bolivia’s president-elect Rodrigo Paz stated that “these 20 years isolated us from the world.” Making clear reference to the heads of state and political leaders who have given him their support after learning the vote count results that granted him victory.

From Nayib Bukele, the Salvadoran president, to Venezuelan political leader María Corina Machado, and even the government of the United States — they have made contact, congratulating and offering their support to the recently elected Bolivian president.

“These calls and messages do nothing but reinforce our democratic vocation — these 20 years isolated us from the world. I believe that the relationship of democracy must prevail above all else. We are on the right path, to place Bolivia in the world and for the world to come to Bolivia,” emphasized Paz.

The president-elect stressed that “we are a project that understands that Bolivia does not eat ideology — in 20 years of a regime the hydrocarbons were spent and we are left with an internal and external debt of more than 40 billion dollars; it has not been a good deal for the country.”

He stressed that “what we are proposing is common sense — to build a reasonable state — and our slogan is capitalism for all.”

With the United States

Regarding diplomatic relations with the United States and distancing from governments such as those of Nicolás Maduro, Nicaragua or Cuba, Paz revealed that it was a decision discussed before the campaign. “We will not have relations with those countries that do not value the vision of democracy. We are clear that everything is within democracy, and nothing outside it.”

On the government of Donald Trump: “I believe aid is mutual, we are the only continent that crosses from the North Pole to the South Pole. And within that logic, we can coordinate matters such as cooperation, trade and economy. Bolivia wants change — it wants to be in the world, and for the world to come to Bolivia.”

On Evo Morales

Paz Pereira assured that “we will do whatever is within our reach to fight against the illicit. We are refocusing Bolivia’s priorities. Our government will make justice be respected — we want to restore institutional order, and justice must act with the rigor of the law. Our government will support everything that means delivering justice.”
