Following the release of UNITEL’s third national poll on voting intentions, political analyst Carlos Valverde stated that candidates must start presenting their proposals and move away from constant criticism.

“The numbers tell us it’s time for the candidates to start talking about their proposals, because their criticisms aren’t doing much,” Valverde said.

He pointed out that in the presidential and vice-presidential debates, the candidates mainly “attacked each other and proposed nothing.”

He also noted that the pro-MAS (Movement Towards Socialism) bloc has failed to find a candidate, which is partly reflected in the high numbers of undecided, blank, and null votes.

“MAS can’t find someone to vote for, but what strikes me is Andrónico’s drop, because probably, following the logic of the poll, this percentage of blank or null votes—which are still decided votes—might include some hidden vote. Not necessarily for MAS or for Andrónico, but there could be something interesting there. We’ll have to see. I think we’ll be left with one more poll,” said Valverde.

The analyst added that it’s time to return to governance through alliances and agreements, and that people no longer seem willing to give high percentages to a single candidate.

“Agreements and pacts—probably that’s what people are looking for. They no longer want to give 56% to one candidate only to have them do what Evo Morales did,” he said.

Amalia Pando: “Tuto and Samuel haven’t convinced” the undecided, and the MAS factions are “the big loser”

Analyst and journalist Amalia Pando shared her thoughts after seeing the results of the third national poll ahead of the August 17 general elections

During her analysis of the third voting intention survey, Amalia Pando noted that candidates Samuel Doria Medina (from the Unidad alliance) and Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga (from the Libre alliance) have failed to win over undecided voters. She also emphasized that the different factions of the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) are “the big loser.”

According to the third national poll, blank votes are at 8.1%, null votes at 13.6%, and undecided voters at 12.4%.

“The undecided vote means they will vote. They’re looking for candidates. It’s clear that Tuto and Samuel haven’t convinced them. They’ve grown slightly, but they haven’t persuaded. They lack a clear message. They symbolize the desire to resolve the crisis, but they’re not convincing in how they would do it,” said Pando.

She also pointed out that “the biggest loser overall is MAS with its various factions. An absolute defeat.”

In that sense, she also described Andrónico Rodríguez, the candidate from Alianza Popular, as another “big loser.”

“The question is, where did the people who initially intended to vote for Andrónico Rodríguez go? He had 14 points in the first poll and ends with six. Where did those votes go? Possibly Rodrigo Paz Pereira’s rise reflects the loss of Andrónico’s support,” she noted.

She added that the intention to cast blank or null votes has not significantly increased, even though the “Evismo” faction has opened campaign offices to promote invalid voting. “Blank and null votes have each grown by just 1%,” she said.
