National Geographic Photographer Visits Alto Milluni.

Daniela Balcázar, a photographer for the international magazine National Geographic, visited El Alto and explored the tourist attractions of Alto Milluni in District 13, capturing images that she will showcase to the world through her publication. Additionally, it was announced that she will return in the coming months to work on a project about women’s empowerment in El Alto.

On Thursday, Pamela Alcázar, Director of Culture for the municipality, guided the photographer through the area’s attractions, located over 4,425 meters above sea level. Balcázar was welcomed by the Alto Milluni community, participated in an Andean wajta ceremony, and toured the “Miner for a Day” tourist circuit at the Milluni Mine, a former tin and zinc mining center from the 20th century.

Inside the mine, the visitor and her entourage reached the site of “El Tío,” the miners’ protector, where they offered coca leaves and cigarettes.

“I had heard of El Tío, but never in such a powerful way,” Balcázar remarked before taking part in the traditional ch’allaritual with alcohol, honoring the enigmatic figure.

I believe it’s important to share this culture. I am fascinated by cultures—it’s part of my job to immerse myself in them. I want to showcase all of this, and I think it’s going to be something very special,” said the National Geographicphotographer.
