On Ballivián Avenue in the South Zone and Montes Avenue in the city center, people are always in a hurry. Fortunately, over the past two years, businesses have opened that allow busy paceños to grab an espresso, cappuccino, or latte on the go.

“No matter how rushed you are, there’s always time for a quality coffee, even if you don’t have time to sit down and enjoy it,” said Verónica, 23, a customer of Cafecito to Go, one of the pioneers of this format in La Paz.

But for both consumers and entrepreneurs, the most important thing is the coffee itself. These drinks are not made with instant brands or generic beans—because the three takeaway coffee shops visited by Visión 360 work with high-quality producers.

Opened in February 2023, this café is located on Ballivián Avenue, near Calle 19 in Calacoto. It offers an Italian-style menu, including cappuccinos and lattes, as well as espresso, iced coffee, and pastries like medialunas.

Love for Coffee
Coffee is the heart of these initiatives, and the entrepreneurs behind them recognize their deep passion for it.

“Everything is out of love for coffee. Here at Ocheto, we love coffee and want to share that passion with people,” says Miguel Ángel Beltrán, head of Ocheto Coffee.

“In my travels, I learned to appreciate good coffee and saw how other nations promote their products, even in small spaces like this,” says Christopher Salas of KeRiquito.

Meanwhile, Marco Schmidt, one of the three partners behind Cafecito to Go, affirms, “Coffee has its magic, just like the way it’s sold.”

This love for the product demands that the beans used be carefully selected. “What keeps me coming back is that they don’t serve just any coffee—it’s not some watered-down, flavorless brew. It’s a quality espresso, well-roasted, ground, and prepared,” says Roberto Cuadros, 30, a regular at Ocheto’s locations.

“I offer a good specialty coffee, carefully selected and ground. You get the same quality as a café in the South Zone, but accessible to everyone so they can experience it. And luckily, many are already addicted to caffeine.”

All the beans used by these businesses are locally sourced, specifically from the Yungas region of La Paz. Cafecito to Go works directly with small and medium-sized producers from Caranavi.

‘We seek out products with the highest ratings, both in cultivation and roasting. This not only ensures that we offer high-quality coffee but also supports local producers,’ explained Schmidt.

Salas attends every producer fair he can find, always tasting what’s available and speaking directly with farmers. ‘I traveled for many years, and in countries like Thailand, I saw how entrepreneurs take pride in their coffee and promote it this way: with grab-and-go coffee shops or small spaces designed to cater to the needs of everyday people following strict routines. I want to recreate that.’

Ocheto has an advantage in this aspect: it owns its own coffee cultivation land in the Yungas. “This way, we ensure that we only have the best for our customers,” guaranteed Beltrán.

Once the raw material supply is secured, the next step is to create a menu that seduces even the most demanding palates while attracting new customers.

Each of the businesses has its own unique offer, with one key central element: the espresso machine. If the coffee is the heart of these businesses, the preparation equipment is the lungs.

Paceños equate having a coffee with taking a moment, chatting, and enjoying. But the routine demands that we provide them with, let’s call it, coffee on the go.

There is no doubt that the entrepreneurs could resort to other preparation methods. In fact, large coffee shops like Typica and Roaster have as many varieties of techniques as they do types of coffee, from the machine to the aeropress and the Italian coffee maker. But many of these require time; time that many of the customers who visit the on-the-go coffee shops do not have.

A perfect offer for the city’s routine
The entrepreneurs recognized that most of their customers, no matter how frequent, are people who are always on the go. “They are the kind of people who respect their routines, who need and appreciate a good coffee at key points of their day, whether before going to work or university, when returning from the same, or when they need something to lift their spirits,” added Schmidt.

While this type of consumer enjoys sitting down and chatting with loved ones, accompanied by a cappuccino, macchiato, or affogato, from Monday to Friday, they usually don’t have the time for it.

There is something very romantic about running and going to a café. For many people, this drink is essential to having a good day. And that’s where we come in.

This is where the espresso comes in as the ideal option. In general, the coffee is delivered within a time frame of three to five minutes at most.

Another great advantage is that the baristas can work on a menu with various options, all of them based on espresso, accompanied by milk, cream, or foam, which is also prepared with the help of the equipment.
Despite the menu differences among the three options, there is one product found in all three menus, which is also among the best-sellers: the cappuccino.

“Not surprisingly: it’s one of the most famous coffee preparations in the world. People know it thanks to popular culture and have many followers,” added Schmidt.

It helps that the cappuccino preparation itself is visually appealing, from placing the freshly ground coffee on the coffee maker’s grid to watching the designs the baristas make with the foamed milk.

For young people, there is also a wide variety of lattes, which consist of coffee with milk topped with a silky layer of foam as the finishing touch. It will be made with one or two shots of espresso, steamed milk, and a fine layer of frothy milk on top.

This base is then complemented with various elements, such as caramel, chocolate, cream, and others.

No matter how busy you are, there’s always a little time for a quality coffee, even if you don’t have enough time to sit and enjoy it.

In the case of KeRiquito, the menu also includes the matcha latte, which is also the owner’s favorite drink. It consists of matcha powder, finely ground leaves from some green tea plants, mixed with water and milk. The type and amount of milk used will vary according to preferences.

Growing businesses
Although all three businesses boast having, in a short time, a regular clientele, their goal is to reach even more people.

They have several advantages over their larger competitors. One of the main advantages is their location, as all three businesses are situated in areas with high foot and vehicle traffic.
Cafecito to Go is located on Ballivián Avenue, near the corner of 19th Street in Calacoto. Its clientele ranges from 25 to 40 years old, including office workers and students.

Up to 22 bolivianos
is the highest price that most of the beverages offered by these on-the-go businesses in La Paz can reach.

Ocheto Coffee has two stores. The first is located at Illampu Street, 775, in the Sajama Hotel Gallery, an area frequented by many tourists. The second is on Oruro Street, half a block from the Post Office. Its clientele includes university students and bank executives, among others.

KeRiquito is located on one of the busiest streets in La Paz: Montes Avenue. The stand is situated near the Banco Nacional de Bolivia branch, on the downhill side of the street. In addition to workers and merchants, many travelers who arrive at the Bus Terminal also visit.

Without revealing their income, the three businesses assured that everything is going smoothly, with some indicating future expansion plans.
