A few days ago, Alexis Alexander Flores Flores received the news that he had been admitted to the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in the United States. He is the young musician who captivated all of Bolivia at the Festival of Bands in Oruro last year. Now 14 years old, he admires Peruvian trumpeter Elmer Churampi and dreams of one day playing at the same level as this renowned musician.

The young trumpeter mesmerized thousands of spectators who attended last year’s Festival of Bands in Oruro, held before the Carnival parade. His performance was widely discussed by those who followed the event on television and social media.

“Congratulations and welcome to Interlochen Arts Academy! We are thrilled to have you join us and look forward to your arrival for the fall 2025 school year,” reads the letter recently received by Alexis’s family from Camille Colatosti, Dean of the Interlochen Arts Academy.

With this, the young musician is beginning to fulfill one of his dreams. In a recent interview with the Bolivisión network, Alexis shared his admiration for Elmer Churampi and his hope of earning a scholarship to the prestigious U.S. academy.

The Peruvian musician he looks up to began playing the trumpet at the age of four, taught by his father, a street band trumpeter. By the time he was seven, Churampi had been invited to join Peru’s National Youth Orchestra and performed as a soloist three times with the National Symphony Orchestra of Peru at ages 7, 8, and 9, playing Carnival of Venice, Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, and Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto.

In 2010, Churampi attended Interlochen’s Summer Camp on a full scholarship, where he played lead trumpet in every concert. He was later accepted into the Interlochen Arts Academy, studying there for three years under Ken Larson.

Now, Alexis Alexander Flores Flores is starting his own artistic journey. As a new member of the academy, he will receive musical training over the next three years. He had already attended Interlochen’s summer camp last year, which fueled his dream of becoming an internationally renowned musician.

This young talent inherited his passion for music from his father, a trumpeter, while his mother plays the flute.

Alexis recalls that he first played the flute at age six. One day, he noticed a trumpet on the floor, and when his father asked if he liked it, he eagerly picked it up. From that moment on, he never stopped practicing. His dedication led him to perform before hundreds of people in Oruro, and now he is set to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional trumpet player.
